Hi,

Check out the Convergence Gallery. If you see the colored outlines or color shading as in the Gallery, you have a convergence problem.

This requires the replacement of the defective IC or ICs and any damaged or smoked resistors. Usually there is little alignment required after the repair. If you play with all the adjustments before the fix, hours may be spent re-aligning.

Don't monkey with it.

This is a delicate and difficult repair. If not done by someone with some electronic repair experience, the TV will likely end up as junk or cost considerably more for a tech to fix the damage done.

If you live in Calgary, call me. If elsewhere, find a competent tech.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Have 47" Samsung HCL743W rear

Here is what to do to confirm what problem is, go to black and white program and make sure color adjustment is turned all the way down to zero.

What you are looking for is what color is the screen?

If it a primary a yellow looking screen (all or most) you have bad Glycol in most likely the blue tube. These sets have a sealed area with a sealed area with Glycol (it is like antifreeze and meant to keep the face of the the three picture tubes cool).

What can happen (usually the blue) is it becomes contaminated with bacteria====note, if blue tube is contaminated you will have yellow screen (red and green=yellow.0

The real easy way to confirm if this is the case is with the back removed and access to the three large lens on top of the tubes look into each lens, if the blue one has no picture and looks like a floodlight, but the red and green have a picture, YOU HAVE FOUND OUT YOUR PROBLEM.

I can tell you if this is the case I can tell you what is involved, this most likely is not a do it yourself repair but i can tell you what is needed.

After turning on the screen it soon turns a green tint. I just transported the tv could I have knocked something out of alignment?

yes or the green tube is going bad. if it holds solid just a little green, you just need to turn down the screen control for the green drive. if it gets brighter and brighter green until its really intense, suspect bad tube or board.

the green drive knob is hidden in the front, behind the front access panel. its labeled but hard to see, only turn the one know counter clockwise, it will be labeled G and SCREEN, there are 6 knobs

This set does not have a bulb. It is a tube type projection set that sounds like it has a convergence problem. Call a qualified tv repair company.

I have a samsung HCL473W and curved blue lines have appeared on the sreen

Try turning down the blue G2 slightly if that doesnt help you will have to trouble shoot the blue crt drive circuit or possibly replace the blue CRT itself.
