6 year old PC today. not that old. pretty new'ish.
wow , you said. this.
run with the large battery out first?
run on AC pack only first? so the PC can have full power and run best , first?>
does the external screen fail, you did not say!
no photos of screen posted.
what did the VGA port do, unstated, only you can login to windows stated, but what about lines.
when did Pc last run perfectly.
did you drop the PC, or hit the screen?
did you try flex the screen with 2 hands
and see if the LINES change, if yes, bad screen.

did buy this PC like this, Bad,?

Seems (me blind) like a bad LCD (damage or cables)
if mobility is not needed
run external screen for ever.
most times a used VGA monitor for $40 is way way cheaper than fixing any old laptop, for $200 parts and labor.
see? and econ 101 solution.

Hdd light does not come on during power up on toshiba l555d-s7005

If the screen stays black it means there is an issue with BIOS. It should load before the HDD ever does. Mother board issue or monitor issue.

I was just using my mom's acer aspire when suddenly a blue screen appeared that stated it was preparing for a crash dump. The computer will turn on and sound like it's starting up, but then it stops and...

from what yu say if i infer correctly then

when powered on the system powers up properly and the HDD and CPU are running fine but there is no display on the screen and is black,

first try the this step, try connecting an external monitor to the VGA port (generally in blue color) and see if you have a Display on the external monitor.

the black screen generally means that either the Display section is not getting power or the invertor board is damaged and this needs professional help in fixing / replacing it.

hope could be of help

NO VGA DISPLAY TOSHIBA SATELLITE M300 FOR VISTA

Hi What precisely do you mean by VGA display, is your laptop not displaying anything on lcd screen,or its having problem giving display on an external monitor connected via a vga port.
if there is no display on the laptop LCD screen, then turn the laptop on and observe for beeps sounds and hard disk spinning sound if still no display is available plug the laptop to external monitor and again restart the laptop. if there is no display on the external screen and laptop is displaying well in LCD, Then most probably you need to press some keyboard combination on laptop keyboard eg: Fn + f4 , refer to your laptop manual also.

Welcome to Fixya

Try to drain the electrostatic charge of the motherboard that usually cause this issue. I wrote a tip on how to do the power drain. Try to plug in external monitor on the VGA port and see if you are getting display using external monitor. If you are getting display using external monitor then the problem would be the laptop LCD. If you are getting the same black screen using external monitor then the problem is already the motherboard.

My hp dv4-1435dx screen is blank. It was on then it froze and then went blank. I have tried to fix it by removing the battery and replacing it a number of times. It comes on when started and plays the...

This could be due to presence of static charges on the notebook or hardware malfunction of the video card or defective LCD display screen of the notebook. To resolve the issue, perform the following steps.
Step 1: Hard Reset
To perform a hard reset, please follow the steps listed below:

1. Unplug the AC adapter from the notebook PC and remove from any port replicator or docking station.
2. Remove the battery from the notebook battery compartment.
3. Press and hold down the power button for about 20 seconds.
4. Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook PC.
5. Press the power button to turn the notebook PC back on.
This will discharge the static charges from the notebook. Now check if the display works fine or not. Incase, if the issue persists, then the video card or LCD screen must have gone bad, and to isolate the same, please connect an external monitor to the notebook and check for the display on it. You can follow the steps below to connect an external monitor to the notebook.
1. Turn off the notebook.
2. Connect the monitor cable from the external monitor to the monitor port on the rear/side of the computer.
3. Connect the monitor to a power source and turn it on.
4. Press the Power button to turn on the computer.

At this time, please follow the instructions mentioned below for switching the display to the external monitor:

The notebook's video card supports three modes. Built-in screen only; external video only; and both on simultaneously (mirrored). If you're not seeing the image on the desired device(s), the notebook's video card is probably in another mode. Press FN + F4 to cycle through the display options: Notebook display, External monitor, both.

If you press FN + F4 once, the external monitor will display & there will be no Notebook LCD display.
If you press FN + F4 twice, the external monitor will display & there will be some shading on the Notebook LCD.
If you press FN + F4 thrice, both Notebook LCD & external monitor will display.

If the issue persists on the external monitor, then this could be due to defective video card on the notebook. However, if the display on the external monitor is fine, then the issue is with the LCD display panel of the notebook. In either cases, the notebook requires a detailed onsite diagnosis by a service technician.

If your notebook is under HP warranty, then contact HP to get the notebook repaired for free of cost.

Acer aspire one power button comes on but screen doesn't come on.

1/ Take a close look at the display in bright light; can you see anything there? (If so then the CCFL (or its power supply) needs replacing on the display
2/ hook up an external monitor and see if that works (or at least if the light stays green on the monitor)
3/ Any boot beep? any "Windows sound"?
4/ try removing the battery and (using only external power) see if it starts.
4/ remove the battery AND the external supply, hold the power switch in at least 30 seconds. Hoojk it up again, try it.

My toshiba laptop is not giving the display at all?

Does the computer boot up?
Connect an external monitor to the laptop and power it up, if you see a clear image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.

If you see a dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
