How do I remove the pulley from my power steering pump? I tried using a 9mm allen wrench but it wouldn't budge?

1. Lift the hood. Remove the power-steering cap. Use the turkey baster to siphon as much fluid as possible from the power-steering pump reservoir. This is done to lessen the fluid loss when the hoses are removed.

   Remove the two pressure hoses from the rear of the power-steering pump, using a wrench and common screwdriver. The high-pressure hose is threaded into the back of the pump while the lower-pressure hose is held on with a clamp.

   Loosen the belt tensioner by using a wrench to move the tensioner away from the belt and removing the belt.

   Place the power-steering pulley extractor tool on the nose of the pulley. The tool has two half shells that clamp around the lip on the nose of the pulley and around the lip of the tool. Thread the tool in until the shells fit on both the pulley and the tool lip. Install the circular metal band to keep the shells in place. Hold the threaded head of the tool with a wrench. With another appropriately sized wrench, turn the large nut above the shells counterclockwise to pull the pulley off.

   Remove the bolts securing the pump to the support bracket. Remove the pump.

   Install the new pump. Insert the securing bolts and tighten. Install the pulley by holding the pulley on the shaft while threading the extractor tool into the center hole of the shaft, with the shells removed. Hold the head of the threaded shaft with one wrench and turn the large nut clockwise with another wrench to push the pulley on the power-steering pump shaft.

   Install the serpentine belt by pushing the tensioner away from the belt while wrapping the belt around the pulleys. Allow the tensioner to press on the belt, causing tension.

   Install the two power-steering hoses. Fill the power-steering pump reservoir with power-steering fluid. Start the truck and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock, left and right several times to bleed all the air from the system. Check the fluid one more time.

here's the procedure on how to replace water pump of your car

1 Turn the belt tensioner pulley counterclockwise on the 3.4L modeal. Use a breaker bar and a socket to rotate the center bolt on the tensioner pulley. If you have a 3.5L engine model, turn the pulley clockwise.

2 Slide the drive belt off the steering pump pulley.

3 Detach the black ground cable from the battery using a wrench.

4 Position a drain pan under the car in the direction of the steering pump hoses.

5 Move any wire brackets near the steering pump out of the way using a wrench or ratchet and socket, if necessary.

6 Disconnect the return hose from the power steering pump by loosening the clamp at the steering pump using a ratchet and socket. Then pull the hose off the pump and let the steering fluid drain into the pan.

7 Detach the pressure hose from the steering pump by unscrewing the retaining nut at the pump using a tube wrench. Let the steering fluid drain on the pan.

8 Unscrew the steering-pump mounting bolts using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

9 Lift the power steering pump off the engine compartment.

Install the New Steering Pump

1 Position the new steering pump in place and start the mounting bolts by hand. Then tighten the bolts using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

2 Attach the pressure hose to the steering pump by starting the retaining nut by hand. Then tighten the nut using the tube wrench.

3 Connect the return hose to the steering pump. Then tighten the clamp using the ratchet and socket.

4 Reinstall any wire brackets you had to remove using a wrench or ratchet and socket.

5 Connect the black ground cable to the battery using a wrench.

6 Install the drive belt by turning the tensioner pulley counterclockwise using the breaker bar and socket. Then slide the belt over the steering pump pulley. If you have the Aztek 3.5L engine, turn the tensioner pulley clockwise.

7 Reinstall any wire brackets you had to remove form near the steering pump using the wrench or ratchet and socket.

8 Connect the black, ground cable to the battery using a wrench.

Bleed the Power Steering System

1 Refill the steering fluid reservoir with new steering fluid. Make sure the level reaches the Full Cold mark on the reservoir.

2 Raise the front of the vehicle using a floor jack until the front tires are off the ground. Then support the car on 2 jack stands.

3 Turn the ignition key to the On position but do not start the engine.

4 Turn the steering wheel fully from left to right 15 times.

5 Check the fluid level in the steering reservoir and add if necessary.

6 Lower the vehicle and start the engine. Turn the steering wheel and listen for steering noises. If you hear noises while turning the steering wheel, repeat steps 2 through 5 of the bleeding procedure to get rid of the air in the steering system. Turn off the engine.

I've gone as far as loosening the motor mounts and raising the engine with a jack. You still have to shoot through the wheel well with a long extension and socket for some bolts on that side.

What is needed Tools: 6mm and 8mm allen wrench socket, 5mm allen wrench. 8mm, 13mm, 19mm socket and ratchet. 10mm combination wrench. Long ratchet extensions (at least one 6in, more are helpful). 5inch Wheel puller (for main shaft pulley). (Some models may need a special spanner tool to adjust the timing belt tensioner) Parts: 2 gal of anti-freeze mixed with distilled water. All three V-belts. (Alt, A/C, P/S) $32.95 New water pump top. $91.91 New gasket for WP. $9.13 New timing belt. $26.13.


Procedure:

Remove battery cable (either power (+) or ground (-)) remove alternator remove A/C remove power steering pump .Remove water pump pulleys remove main shaft pulleys remove timing belt covers remove A/C mounting hardware remove timing belt (don't turn any of the wheels its connected to) replace timing belt adjust belt tension remove water pump face put on new gasket and new part.

Leave pulleys off. replace bottom timing belt cover, replace crank shaft pulley, replace steering pump, replace A/C, put small belt on A/C (hang loose) put large belt around A/C, Main and water pump pulley. put middle size belt on Main water pump and power steering pump reattach bolts for the steering pump pulleys put alternator back on adjust all belts. connect battery

Problem areas:
Main pulley: There are 4 6mm hex head bolts. These must be removed. The main 19mm hex head can be used to turn the engine it the timing belt slips and you have to readjust the timing.

Putting on new belts: This can be a real pain if you get VW belts. The adjustments won't give enough to put the belts over the edge so the easy way is to remove the pulley on the water pump. Then its real easy.

Timing: If you turn the wheels that the timing belt goes on you will have to reset the timing. Mark the timing points with something like whiteout so its easy to see. The timing mark on the toothed gears are small dots. The timing mark for the crankshaft is a small cut on the outer pulley. When its aligned with the intermediate wheel timing mark (there is an arrow on the cover as a hint) should intersect as viewed from the right wheel well. The camshaft timing mark should line up with the top of the engine near the front.

Power steering pump: It is held on with lots of bolts. One is in a channel that is hard to see but can be found with a 6" extension. If you look at the pump you will see three bolts that go into the housing. This should give you an idea where the forth is.

To replace:

1. Remove pax wheel, splash guard, power steering pump, motor mount, crankshaft pulley, plastic covers (3).
2. Before removing, clearly mark timing belt and pulley with paint marker because overhead cams will move it engine is not at top dead center. Remove tentioner pulley and remove belt.
3. Compress piston rod with clamp and hold down with small allen wrench through pin hole.
4. Replace belt, then tensioner pulley with pin still in place.
5. Remove allen wrench and good luck. Install everything in reverse.
6. Tedious but possible for anyone with some mechanic experience.

you need a belt rope wrench to hod the pulley, however you can remove it without taking the pulley off and put it in a vice to get it off. you will need a 3/8 ths drive ratchet to get it out with and tap it with a hammer also use a torch to heat up the outer edge to get the lock tight break loose.

I have to replace my pulley as well; all of the information I've found on the net say's you need to remove the whole engine mount plate assembly from the left side of the engine and that you can't replace just the pulley.

Well they're all full of ****; rockauto.com sells a replacement pulley, you'll find it in there online catalog. In order to replace the pulley, you will need to remove the power steering pump and support bracket, with the power steering pump removed, the tensioner arm will move to it's rest position with the pulley mounting bolt hidden behind the support bracket, you can push down on the tensioner arm against the spring pressure to expose the allen headed mounting bolt and get an allen wrench on it.

Rockauto offers three different pulleys from about 15 to 25 dollars.... not a terribly easy job, but very doable and about $300.00 cheaper (part only) than replacing the tensioner arm asm.

You don't use an allen wrench to pull it off it is a press off/on.You have to have a special tool like this to do this.
