Keithncp, Take battery to local shop to prove battery is good when a "dummy" resistive load is placed across terminals and measured voltage is within specification. If voltage falls off more than 1-2 volts, replace battery. 12fixlouie

The laptop has stopped working, it starts on the button but immediately shuts down. There is no power light shown from the mains when the battery is removed. When fitted the battery will not charge but the orange charge led flickers.
------correction, the battery will charge and the laptop does start up, but only on the battery power, not on the mains even though the cable is connected.
Thanks for the advice 12fixlouie, however I have now had the thing started on the mains power pack. It appears that the connection of the cable/plug into the laptop is not making a good contact. Possibly wear and tear. Not sure if it is the plug or the socket. Putting finger pressure in one direction on the plug allows the connection and the laptop starts up, but as soon as the pressure is released the power cuts and the machine shuts down. Damned annoying as the machine has not really been used that much.
