Download the VLC media player to play back anything and also download the free version of Ashampoo burning software. With both you are in the drivers seat at no cost.
You will need to re-install the driver. Right click the device in device manager and select properties. Navigate to the driver section and uninstall all existing drivers. (It may *not* give you the option to do that, depending on how corrupted the driver is, but it should.)
Reboot the PC.
Upon reboot, Windows should find the new device and install generic drivers. It will probably ask you to reboot a second time.
A better not complicated solution is an external drive. Like the: LG GP08LU10 Optical MediaSlim External Super-Multi DVD Drive
You might not know it from looking at this DVD drive's sleek,
slim exterior, but it's loaded with capabilities. LG's external CD- and
DVD-burner looks great, and works in four unique formats. Super-multi
read-and-write lets you select your style for maximum performance, while
the USB connection means there's no need for an AC adapter.

this is a tough one. I found this at acer:Optical Drive 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive or DVD/CD-RW Combo (varies by model)
The bad news is the part where it says varies by model. You will need the exact model of the drive to get the proper driver for it. My advice is to take it to an Acer shop and ask them to identify the cd drive for you.
