I am running Windows XP on my laptop. I downloaded Topo USA 7.0 and when I go to use to program it will either lock up my computer or the blue screen pops up. Either way it loses all info that was saved. Anyone else have this problem ?

1. Last Known Good Configuration
   • 1Restart your HP computer after the blue screen shuts it down.
   • 2 Repeatedly tap "F8" when the HP logo screen appears during bootup. This will load a menu with various boot options to select.
     
   • 3 Use the arrow keys to select "Last Known Good Configuration" and press "Enter." The system will roll back recent changes and may fix the problem. Continue to the next step if the computer does not successfully boot.
     
   In Place Upgrade
   • 4 Insert the Windows XP installation CD into your HP computer's disc drive.
     
   • 5 Restart the computer.
     
   • 6 Press any key on your keyboard when you see "Press any key to boot from CD..." This will launch the Windows Setup program.
     
   • 7 Press "Enter" to begin the installation process.
     
   • 8 Press "F8" to agree to the Windows XP licensing agreement.
     
   • 9 Highlight your current installation of Windows XP and press "R" to perform a repair installation.
     
   • 10 Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the repair installation. Your personal data and applications will remain intact, but all Windows updates and service packs will be removed during this process.

• Back up your data before running a repair installation on your HP computer.

install virtual box, a free virtual computer from oracle. It reserves disk space and runs a separate operating system, in a window on your desktop. Install virtual box, install windowsXP, install your software.

The problem is your computer uses a SATA hard drive and windows XP doesn't naitively support SATA. You have three options around this.

1. Go into BIOS and if you have disable SATA/AHCI and set it to SATA/IDE emulation mode
2. Download nlite http://www.nliteos.com/download.html and download sata drivers from intel's website and build your own windows XP disc and incorporate the sata drivers into it. Then use this disc to install.
3. Download VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ and install XP in a virtual machine to run on top of Windows 7

Windows XP will go end-of-life in 2014 and then Microsoft will no longer make software that is compatible FYI.

i have the same problem.....need answers, i think it has something to do with windows 7 with my laptop that has xp it works fine..

I don't know that this is a solution, but I'll give you my experience in having run failures in XP. None of my Magellan software would run after updating to Internet Explorer 7. After considerable work with Dell and MSoft, they were unable to resolve the issue. The application would run on restart, but after opening IE 7, would no longer function. I have uninstalled IE 7 and am now using Firefox getting the Magellan software to run successfully. Reviews on Magellan aren't very good; National Geographic has a great Topo program if you are looking.

more info, please: anyone trying to help you with this needs to know the following: what linux and what linux boot method (USB, CD/DVD) and how you made your linux boot disk, at what point the Linux installer stops responding, and please God did you shut down Windows before starting the Linux installer?

For back roads, you will need a Topo mapping program, ie Topo USA 2008 or Topo Canada 4 (you don't mention what country you are in).

Topo Canada comes on four CDs, Topo USA 2008 comes on one DVD so you'll have to upgrade your drive, or else load the maps from someone else's computer.

r u sure the monitor is causing the blue screen of death?
I would try another monitor to verify.
