The MTU value on my 3com officeconnect router can't be changed, it keeps being reset to 576 thus, my cable connection gets slowed down.
The strange part is, once I change it to 1500 it works for a minute or two, then back to 576 and back crawling speeds.
I tried talking to 3Com people but they want 200 bucks for their assistance, would be cheaper to buy a new router. Does it has a faulty EEPROM?
No, the MTU is being overridden by the cable provider. Most ISPs use 576 as the default MTU as this was shown to be the most effective packet size some years ago; unfortunately, that was before streaming video and large downloads, but some ISPs haven't changed their policies. The effect on your speed will only be noticeable if you are downloading large files, streaming or using skype or a similiar VOIP product. To be honest, most of the core switches on the internet use 576 anyway, so changing locally really won't matter.
