Cant change MTU value on 3com officeconnect router

The MTU value on my 3com officeconnect router can't be changed, it keeps being reset to 576 thus, my cable connection gets slowed down.
The strange part is, once I change it to 1500 it works for a minute or two, then back to 576 and back crawling speeds.
I tried talking to 3Com people but they want 200 bucks for their assistance, would be cheaper to buy a new router. Does it has a faulty EEPROM?

No, the MTU is being overridden by the cable provider. Most ISPs use 576 as the default MTU as this was shown to be the most effective packet size some years ago; unfortunately, that was before streaming video and large downloads, but some ISPs haven't changed their policies. The effect on your speed will only be noticeable if you are downloading large files, streaming or using skype or a similiar VOIP product. To be honest, most of the core switches on the internet use 576 anyway, so changing locally really won't matter.

RESET WIRELESS ROUTER
If you cannot access the router with the default password,or even the one you created, then most routers will have a small button (hole)that will restore the router back to the default settings.Every manufacturer's router is different, so a user Manualwill often be required in locating the specific settings you need to change.Go to the 3Com WEB site for details on resetting your router.

Im trying to connect my xbox 360 to xbox live but its gives me an error about eh MTU setting being to low i checked the router page but i cant find the tab/button to change it.

Sounds like a firmware problem on the router. login to the router and check the firmware version against the latest from 3com - the router should be able to check automatically.
Double check the universal plug and play (uPnP) is enabled - it should be under security settings on the router.

Code d ereur 034310

HI, This will usually be the cause of a server issue that relates to the mtu values that are set in your device. Try changing your mtu value to 576 in the connection settings/advanced section. The initial setting of 1400 my be invalid at this time, thus, interrupting your update service download.

Simply navigate into System settings>internet>Connection settings>Connection x>Change settings, then press right arrow till u get to the MTU Value. The default is 1400 but you will need to change it to 576. This should open the gate and allow the system to update itself, properly.

Error Code: 034310

((Cannot connect to the system update server)).
