Laptop won't recognize dial up modem. I'm not sure if the small internal modem is all I need for dial up access, or if I need to get a PCMIA card. It's a Dell Insprion 2650 laptop. Thanks

If the internal modem is functional and the driver is installed, then that should be all you need for a dial up connection. If the modem is listed in device manager without a Yellow Exclamation Point then the driver is likely loaded properly. if it does have an exclamation point, then you may need to load the driver. There were 3 different modem models shipped with that system.

If installing drivers doesn't resolve, then a PCMCIA modem is a inexpensive option

This laptop has already a dial up modem already installed. check the device manager if the modem is installed or not. check if there is a bang on the driver. if there is, download the driver for the modem in dell's website. it is support.dell.com. just put in the service tag of the the laptop so you can see the needed driver for the modem.

How to connect my dell dial up modum to lap top

Your dial up modem needs to be ab external modem.
You can not use an internal modem from another machine unless you create a network and share your connection.
If you have an external modem then connect the modem to the available port on your laptop and let plug and play take over. If you do not have a port on your laptop and you modem has a serial port you will need a usb to serial adapter which you can get at Radio Shack.

well according to the specs i saw it already has a wireless lan card, an ethernet card, and a old school phone modem jack, so you should be good. are you having issues connecting to the internet via wifi?

While using router most downloads stall. when pc direct connect to modem problem goes away

I do not know if youre using a usb wireless or not but i have ran into problems to where a usb wireless will overheat due to large downloads if this is the case I suggest that if using a desktop get an internal wireless adapter or if its a laptop either use its built in or get a pcmia card.

HP pavilion dv5-1125nr notebook, dial up modem is not working

Save yourself alot of grief. Purchase a PCMIA or USB modem and your done. A very inexpensive fix. I am a certified HP Master tech and I will tell you that HP does have some consistent problems withg their modems. If you can spare a few bucks go to www.driveragent.com and try to locate an updated driver.

Ethernet cable does not fit

The modem jack is too small because it is for a phone line connection not an ethernet connection. If you want to get online by dial-up, you need to connect modem to a phone line. Ohterwise look for another input jack on the laptop that the ethernet cable will insert to.

Modem doesn't recognize dial tone

Hello,

If you are on another computer and everything is fine. I would say that the modem has been damaged by some type of power surge, especially if there has been recent storms. If this is the case, the modem would need to be replaced. Since that modem is internal It may be difficult for you to replace.

According to the manual at http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_outFrm.jsp?moid=1132652&rpn=PTA42U&ct=DS&soid=1170276&BV_SessionID=@@@@0589613970.1216923303@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadeejkmemelcgfkceghdgngdgnn.0 you dont have PCMCIA option.

You can locate a Toshiba Repair Center at http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_gaspLocator.jsp?subs=tais&BV_SessionID=@@@@0589613970.1216923303@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadeejkmemelcgfkceghdgngdgnn.0 and see what options they give you.

Thanks

Ethernet controller

Is this an external PCMIA card that you want to install into your laptop, or are you opening up the laptop and modifying the motherboard?

If its a PCMIA card that you are looking for, then I would suggest the D-Link DFE-690TXD PCMIA Ethernet Adapter. I have one that I'm using with an old HP notebook that has a fried internal network card. You can buy it from newegg for about 32 bucks with shipping.

Modem

To access the ports you mean via the control panel.  If it is an internal modem then XP would automatically install it as a hardware providing it is connected to the motherboard.  I detected you saying that you rebuilt the PC.  Have you slotted an internal modem into one of the periferal slots or did it use an external modem.  Did you know you dont need a modem to logon to the net unless your dialing up? But if you use broadband most use an external modem that connects fast ethernet connection.  But I suppose you know this after all you rebuilt the machine.

Setting up an MN700 Base Station with dialup

1. disable all ICS and all Proxy settings on all machines 2. connect the NIC to the MN700 using Port 1 3. set up the MN700 and the wireless connection 4. switch the MN700 to Bridging mode 5. enable ICS on the host computer The basic object is to have the working connection for your dial-up, then set up the base station as an access point only, then share the working connection via ICS through the NIC. Quite similar to having a switch box, but you're going wireless with it. You don't need to feed the MN-700 any of the normal info like your Internet Service Provider's IP/DNS, etc., because your computer already is sharing that info.
