Your dial up modem needs to be ab external modem.
You can not use an internal modem from another machine unless you create a network and share your connection.
If you have an external modem then connect the modem to the available port on your laptop and let plug and play take over. If you do not have a port on your laptop and you modem has a serial port you will need a usb to serial adapter which you can get at Radio Shack.

If you are not using your modem to connect to internet or something else you can get by... Follow the steps...
Right click on "my Computer" click on "properties" click on "Hardware" tab click on "device manager" Find your modem in the list and click on it once. On the menu bar at the top click on "action" and select "disable" That should stop your computer looking for drivers for your modem.
If it doesn't work, it may be your web browser. Check your internet connection settings and make sure you browser is not trying to use dial up connection. Go to your internet explorer properties click on connection tab and check "never dial" option for dial up connection. Good Luck :)

I was given a think pad 2647 and I can't get on the internet.

It may not detect it automatically. You will need to configure your dial up modem if you are trying to connect to the internet that way. Go into the network connections and go through the wizard there. It should ask you for the telephone number to dial for internet access so have that handy. If you don't get that box, you went to the wrong area.

Wireless in dell lap top

It has something to do with the use of your wireless connection especially if it is an open access service. It is possible that there are many users in your area and you have to share the bandwidth of the wireless connection that reduce the efficiency of your laptop. Try finding another source where only few people connect.

Cannot connect to the internet

open internet explorer, go to tools, internet options, then the connections tab and make sure ' never dial a connection' is ticked, assuming you had a dial up connection before using the router on this pc or if you briefly used it.
