TomTom Go 710

My unit turns off by itself every four or five minutes while I'm driving. Sometimes happens when giving directions and sometimes while I'm using the Bluetooth. Incredibly annoying. What can I do to prevent it?

Ok, lets start with explaining the different code types:

Product code
The TomTom product code consists of 15 characters. It is a unique code to prove that you have an official TomTom product and hence you need it for product activation.

Device code
The device code consists of 10 characters. It is different for every device, so make sure you use the device code for your own device, on which you want to use the software.
When you activate manually the device code is shown on your device during activation.
Click here for help on where to find your device code.

Activation code
The activation code consists of 15 characters. It is generated from the product code and the device code. This activation code is required to run the software on your device. It only enables the software to run on that particular device.
Automatic activation
In most cases the software is activated automatically using an existing internet connection.
Manual activation
In some cases you may have to manually activate your software. In this case the product code and the device code generate a unique activation code. Enter this code on your device.
Go to http://www.ttcode.com/ to obtain an activation code for manual activation.

What to do if the activation fails
Make sure you have the latest version of the TomTom application installed on your TomTom device.
If you can’t activate a map on your TomTom GO / ONE / RIDER,
download Clear_Flash, follow instructions here

SOURCE: Battery replacement for TomTom 710

I have found a trick for those bad battery ,but you lose your waranty
you need to open your tomtom , behind the screen you wil find the battery(for the Go 710 it is an 3.7 V ,2400mAh,samsung ICR18650-24)
you find 3 wires : red, black, yellow cut them of at the half of the wire size
, then cut off your car loader wire (tomtom)(5v), you will see again 3 wires inside :red, black, white
connect the red with red, black with black, white with yellow
(the best thing is to make a little hole in the cover to pass the wire, so it will be beter for closing the all thing)
I did it and it works pretty fine ,I had save 30 dollars ;) :D
I did in approximatly 30 min
remember you will have no battery any more and no waranty of tomtom!
It only whorks then with your car loader tomtom

Pin idea close but bad, due to pointyness.
use a paperclip to press the RESET button.
this won't junk the gel button you are trying to press.

soft reset, push & you feel a 'click' action of button - press & release

hard reset, push (feel 'click' action) and hold for 20 secs or so

Also, remove card can trigger a soft reset.

Possible battery shot or board defective...

Hello.

2 Place the TomTom outside inan open space without tall trees or large buildings around you, and the TomTomwill find the location. It can take up to five minutes when starting the TomTomfor the first time. The "Driving View" appears in color when the GOhas positioned itself.
3 Tap the screen to launch themain menu and touch "Navigate to" then "Address." Choosebetween "City Center,""Postcode" and so on. Type the details onto the screen using theletter-pad. Touch "Done" when you are finished and the TomTom willcalculate the route.

Waiting for a valid gps signal

Not sure if this will help you or not. GPS needs a clear line of sight, tall buildings, bad spot in your car or on your dash, weather conditions and pink elephants all will interfere with the GPS signal. Keep the unit low and as far forward as you can so that it has the best chance for signal. Best position i have found is 3-4 inches above the heater vents on the dash and directly in front of you since this is the spot that is generally unobstructed by anything.
One final thing, sometimes you have to shut them down start driving then turn it on, they do sometimes lock themselves up and out of things. Don't know how or why but it does happen. See pink elephants for better results.
Hope this helps

My TomTom Go 910 will sometimes not turn on, sometimes hangs on the black TomTom screen and will not turn off, a hard reset will get it going again. It also keeps turning itself on when I'm driving. I...

I think it is the same dock contact problem.
the battery won't charge and can't supply enough
power for harddrive to rotate and it shutdown by itself.

I HAVE A TOM TTOM GO 710...DOES IT NEED A SIM CARD

yes, the tomtom 710 needs the sd card which has the maps on it. if you just bought it and didnt get one with it, i suggest you take it back, because the cost of the card often out weights the value of the gps.

if you want to buy a sd card for it, you can get one HERE on the tomtom site or you might want to try ebay.com which sometimes they have them...i just checked ebay for you and currently there are none listed.

TomTom slow and sometimes won't configure to satellite

All gps units do not do well trying to find a satellite on the move. You should let your unit locate satellites before you start moving.

Waiting for a valid gps signal

A couple solutions:

1) Make sure the TomTom can "see" the sky well... the GPS satellite waves are rather weak and easily blocked by trees, and anything not a window.

2) Hook up your TomTom to the computer (see details at www.tomtom.com or in the manual)

2b) Do a "sync" and download all updates. One of the updates is a small file that tells the TomTom where the satellites are located this week, and helps it sync up much faster. The longer time between uses, the longer it takes TomTom to find the satellites, and that can takes up to 2-5 minutes sometimes.

That can be frustrating with a car full of people waiting to get going and the driver doesn't want to drive without making sure the TomTom works and is giving valid directions.

TomTom shuts down enroute

It sounds like a low battery, if you have an AC charger for this unit use it before starting out DC does not charge sufficiently to maintain long term use. It is more of a maintenance trickle charge.
Other than that get a new battery fitted and dont start the engine with the gps plugged in to power unitil enine is going this way your battery will last longer and not spike the mother board. What you never heard of this? it is such a common happening and TOMTOM love selling new boards that;s why they dont tell you this piece of information.

But seriously the replacement battery should solve your problem
