A 14 month old Acer aspire M1640 wil not show any video signal. No lights on keyboard or USB Mouse. CD/DVD LED lights up and door opens, HDD seems to power up.Fans start on CPU. Have changed video card and still no success (one from the Acxr works in an HP fine). Have removed BIOS battery, reset all DIMMS and Power leads. Motherboard or CPU problem?

i found the same problem (can't load BioS) but we are not alone as you can see on web about M1640 and M1641 it's very popular defect I made various test: cpu (pentiun e2180) pass the test mounted on another PC. I removed the two ram and replace with other ,result nothing (Pc power on but can't load the BIoS). Some of this Acer model have this motherboard crash look also here http://www.tomshw.it/forum/schede-madre-e-ram/129267-scheda-madre-non-da-segnali-di-vita-microstar-n1996.html
try removing the bios battery and unplugging the unit, wait about 5 minutes and put battery back in and plug computer back up. Try to boot, if you still have not video, try hooking up a different monitor.
If there is no display on the monitor, then your computer is not sending a video signal to the monitor. This could be caused by a bad video card or some other hardware problem. I would open the case and disconnect all the devices (hard drive, CD, etc. Leave only the CPU, memory, and video connected. You could leave the keyboard and mouse connected too. If your computer then starts, you can start to add devices (after turning the computer off) one at a time. If this doesn't work, then you are looking at replacing the motherboard or just the video card if that is possible.
Try booting your computer from CD ROM with the OS CD/DVD already inserted and when prompted just try repair. If that does not work re-install the same on the same 'partition' assuming it to be C by deleting the the windows system files only. While doing so keep the internet on and immediately after the basic version of the OS is installed and the m/c boots-up for the first time, go to the official website and download the latest drivers for every component like toch-pad, keypad, display, audio, etc.(i.e. almost all the drivers)
Hi,
I hope i can help resolve your problem for you.
this may be a problem relating to your system device driver files.
Try This:-
go to My Computer/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. at the bottom of the page you will see USB.
If you have any yellow symbols ( exclamation Marks ) then the driver has been corrupted, or installed incorrectly.
if you have a system restore disk. this may solve the problem for you. or recovery cd.
If you require further assistance, please ask.
A temporay solution is to use a pcmia card with usb port slots. That way you can connect a usb keyboard, usb mouse or any other peripheral device thru this slot. It has worked for me for 1 month so far. It is the most inexpensive way to temporarily fix this aspire 5100 manufacturer defect. I believe that this model easily overheats and affects the motherboard in areas that control dvd, usbs, keyboard and mouse. I am contemplating a suit against Acer for this 'lemon' of a product. There has been no recall nor support from Acer to fix this problem and they continue selling this and other defective products. Feel free to email me at [email protected] from comments or questions. Ray=)
If you have got a USB receiver for the wireless keyboard and mouse, then the solution might be with the receiver. Normally we know that to play a USB thumb drive, we simply plug in and play. But some model of Acer computer require us to press the button on the thumb drive to activate it. The model I had (an Aspire model) set the press button same as the blicking light bulb. So (a) turn on computer, (b) plug in thumb drive receiver (c) press button on the drive, (d) press "contact" button on the mouse and keyboard. That works for me.
