Hi Maria,
You can hear the sound means your TV and the DVD player are working well. May be the video connecting cord ( yellow connector) between the TV and DVD player has gone bad. Please try replacing it. For testing, you can interchange it with any of the two sound connecting cords which have white and red connectors. I hope it helps.

We have reconnected our DVD to our new flatscreen and can see the picture, hear the sound but the picture is only black and white

This sounds like either the colour settings on the DVD are wrong for your new TV, or the TV has got the wrong setting for the socket that the DVD is connected to.
Go to the menu of the DVD first and look for picture settings etc. Or colour, keep your eyes peeled for the words PAL or NTSC.

Why use the TV in hearing the sound from DVD
player. You can use some small speaker and connect it at the back of the DVD player.

Turn TV on. you can hear something in the tv making a spinning sound-- kind of like when you put a dvd into a dvd player. Picture is fine, just the sound.

The sond you hear is the safety switch that keep turning tv off because a fault is detected.

i think you need to get an Optical Digital Audio Cable and connect it to the tv and speakers then it should work

No picture, but can hear sound

hold down the stop button for 5 sec on your dvd player not the one on the remote control

Check your connections. Make sure they are hooked up correctly(ie yellow to yellow. Check both the connectoins on the dvd player and the tv.

make sure you connected your plugs to the video you have on your tv( video1, video 2) unless you have to have it on ch 3 or 4

Hi there

your dvd player got three cable one red two white
three yellow ok here i go dvd player input plug in the yellow cable in the yellow in put @ the back of your dvd dvd player
the white cable and red cable is your sound the yellow cabe is your picture see that you have a yellow input @ the back of you tv and plug in the yellow in it then it will work
