That means that the operating system doesn't have a database for your Ethernet device. You have to have the driver that came together with your PC and you should find the driver for your Ethernet device using that.
In XP-Go to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections
Verify that the ethernet adaptor is not disabled. If it is, right click and then click enable.
If that doesn't work, try to right click and "repair connection"
If that doesn't work. Go to Start>Control Panel>System
Click on the Hardware tab, then on the Device Manager. Scroll until you find your network adaptor and make sure that there isn't a yellow or red symbol next to it. If there is, you need to reinstall the driver (check the IBM website for this).
Try this driver. I've used it on a few I-series Thinkpads that I've had come through my shop. After the download, uninstall the ethernet drive from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the ethernet port and reinstall the drive automatically. If this one doesn't work for you, let me know, an d we'll try a different one.
lets start with the ThinkCentre A50 8175. download and install the chipset drivers first. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-60642 after you reboot install the network driver.
