First check to see if the sub woofer itself is not defective.
There are components in the various associated circuits that are failing. I realize the receiver and sub woofer are not old, but this is very possible.
You will have to determine which of the units is defective, then you can call the manufacture to find out who their authorized service rep is.
From experience, I have seen electrolytic capacitors of various types cause these types of faults. The service work is time consuming, but can be achieved. The labor cost for the time involved to troubleshoot the unit will be more expensive than the parts themselves.

Oh I checked with my own receiver and the sub works fine, but thanks for the post. Also I found the mute button on the romote and it doesn't do anything it says when it is on or off, but it doesn't change anything. Maybe the mute got stuck on in the wiring inside?
