Try cleaning the battery posts both in the camera and on the new battery a finger mark on the battery terminal posts can stop a camera working but do fully charge that battery before you use it

have you tried an external battery charger and a different battery?..... maybe its the camera not sending power to the battery..... or the battery is good and the camera is dead, the external charger will help you decide where the fault is.
Is your new battery charged? You may need to place it in the charger or hook the camera to the AC power and leave it overnight. If you have a charging cradle try to charge the battery that way. Sometimes that arrive dead.
I just bought my stylus 840 olympus digital camera in aruba one and half weeks ago. Charged the battery and it worked fine for the two times I used it. Now it won't turn on. I charged the battery. Even bought a new one and nothing happens.
The symptom of light staying on briefly then going off suggest the battery is dead. If you bought a new battery did you put it in correctly? turn it around and try again.
Mine had the same problem. I consulted http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/ and it said to use rechargeable batteries only. The entry claimed that alkaline batteries, even if they're brand new, don't have sufficient power for more than a few pictures and may not even be powerful enough to turn the camera on. I was dubious, but I tried putting in a pair of fully charged rechargeables and, by Gum, the camera was suddenly working again. So before junking the camera, try investing 20 bucks in a battery charger and a pair of AA rechargeables and see if that fixes it.
I think this is a general Fuji design fault in the camera circuitry. I have an older F455 which has exactly the same problem and I did the same - bought new batteries only to discover that didn't help.
The only solution is to spend even more money for a stand alone battery charger.
