My Garmin Nuvi 255W, which comes on normally when I start the car, is not coming on. It is only about 5 months old. I keep it plugged into the lighter at all times. Do I need to worry about a battery in the GPS?

More than that! keeping it plugged into the car is damaging the SIIRF chip and battery when you start the motor. Also the unit needs to be charged properly before use in an AC charger or vIA USB The DC in the car will not fully charge the unit. In fact it also leaks power back to the battery of the car when you turn ignition off, so dropping the volatage and amps of the battery in the GPS.
ALWAYS UNPLUG BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

Always charge/recharge it prior to use in a AC or USB environment

Battery life is average 2 years unless used like you say you have. Then 3-6 months might see it collapse!

try a full and proper recharge first

because it is old and dead.... no seriously, your cell phone doesn't last 6 years, why do you expect this to?
if it does not respond to a power button, powered into a car or plugged into a computer, the unit is toast.

The simple way is to send the unit to Garmin they will load the maps for free.
If you keep trying - try this -

With your thumb in the lower right corner of the screen - pushing in - like there is an X there - [ push with your thumb before you turn it on] Turn it on -
when this screen comes up - push YES -

then try your maps.
If they do not load on your pc [ which must have the unit hooked up and a legit copy of the newest maps ] then send the unit to Garmin. They will load your maps for you FREE. 86278d7.jpg

No, it may take a little longer if you are charging through the USB port. I normally have mine plugged in while driving, it charges and is in use too. To use GPS with USB. First turn the GPS on (without USB plugged in). Press Battery symbol on screen for about 10 seconds, a test screen will come on. Plug in the USB (bottom of screen shows USB connected). Tap EXIT to return to maps. You can now use it while USB is charging Make sure you turn GPS off before removing the USB cable

to soft reset & keep data....
Slide power key to on/off, hold it for 8/10 seconds

Update from Garmin, use the web-updater. keep it updated, delete old junk and POIs.

hard reset.
Hold lower corner of screen, while turning on, keep pressing, when "clear all data appears" click yes,
sould resolve the problem
