I bought a used R40. The battery seemed pretty good and it worked ok for several months. I did not notice the color of the indicator light at the time. It may have been green.
Now, it is always yellow or orange. I left it plugged in over night, expecting it to fully charge. Howerver when I tried to use it under battery power, it would not start up at all. I had to plug it into the wall to use it.
What could be the problem?
Also, where can I find information about all of the indicator lights (for example the battery indicator changing from yellow to green, if this is true) and features of my computer?

must use an OEM install copy of the version on your key sticker. retail and upgrade versions will not work. i had the same problem with my r40. had to use e-donkey file sharing program to find it.
I had the same problem with my R40 (2681) and a Linksys G router. The specs on IBM's/Lenovo's site indicate that the wireless card in the R40 only handles certain types of wireless encryption. The newer types (e.g. WPA) won't work on it and they are usually the standard on routers nowadays. My Linksys G router works fine with the R40 with WEP or with no encryption. Not ideal, but that's life with an old laptop.
Please clarify - "doesnt Work".
Does anything happen at all when you press the power button?
Are there lights indicating charging when it's plugged in the wall??
Is the battery in the laptop???

If the the ram is the problem of your system, there should be a power on light on the system. indicating that some of the component of the system is not working correctly. But since you mentioned there is no light, it is the possibility that the problem is the motherboard itself.
Here is a link to all the drivers and software you need to put back on your R40 laptop. The one you were asking about is a bit more than halfway down the page, listed under ACPI Power Management. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-46024
Check the ac adapter. It seems your adapter is not charging it. Either the ac adapter or your dc port may be the problem. Is this the correct adapter, is it giving the correct voltage. These should be considered also.
