Please clarify - "doesnt Work".
Does anything happen at all when you press the power button?
Are there lights indicating charging when it's plugged in the wall??
Is the battery in the laptop???

Thanks!!
if the charging cord is making good contact with the laptop - a light indicator will flash letting you know its charging.
Removing the battery pack - the laptop should power on directly plugged into the wall.
It is my experience generic power plugs do not work properly 90% of the time.... however if all the ratings are the same.... it should work!!
Try and find a good (used) one on ebay, or get the one designed for your laptop.
If there is ANY wiggle in the power port - you may have a damaged the power jack (very common).
The solder around the legs is not very strong, and any bump or twisting while the cord is plugged in will break it right off the motherboard.
These are a complicated repair - as the motherboard must be removed by disassembling the entire laptop.
I recommend The Laptop Guy to all my customers.
They send you a shipping box - pre-paid, and for a flat $79 (which is refunded or credited once you OK the repair) they Test, diagnose, and clean the laptop.
Since you were able to power up once (briefly) says to me the battery works - but cannot be charged.
Unplug the power cord from the laptop, and try to wiggle the jack (pictured above) with your finger or pencil eraser. (you said there was a little wiggle in it - but you attributed it to a generic cord)
Any movement indicated it has been damaged and will need to be repaired for your laptop to work properly again.

I told you earlier in my post - if the laptop is getting energy - a charge - the charging led will blink.
If there are no blinking lights - the laptop is not seeing any voltage.
If the laptop does not power up when plugged in and the battery removed, the power supply cord is not making proper contact.
There should be no looseness in the connection.
The inside of the charging barrel is the Power connection (mates with the pin inside the charging jack picture above) - and the outside of the plug is the ground.

The battery's in. There is nothing that happens when I plug it in. No lights, no nothing. After I'd made the original power supply rather anhialated it made a quick screen type announcement(as when it turns on)and then nothing. I bought this power supply online, of a generic type, and it is for a type 2897 ibm but it does feel a little looser on the connection for the laptop. I don't know if it's not getting a complete connection or what. I would rather try another power supply somewhere to make sure the one I bought actually does fit (because I don't want to just go out and buy another one) or if there's a way to see if the thing is getting any juice from the power supply. I just don't know how to check that. Thank you. Lori Real
Well there is no wiggle in the little port. I meant the power supply connector seems to be bigger than the little thing that sticks out to be plugged to. My other one was alot tighter and I just don't know now if the thing fits properly. I guess I'll see if there's anyone else who might tell me of a way to tell if the laptop is getting energy to it or not. Thanx, Lori
