Turn on flash while pressing some of those buttons with good batteries

Try switching from Meter to Standard Mode and move head around.

Try move the flash head(flash tube) in Manual mode.

It's in electronic locked up because you're moving that flash tube zoom too much. 98% of photographers use that mode:-(

My canon 580 EX II stops firing even with new batteries

You must disable the 580EX II form using the 4AA.

4AA must be needed when using hv power pack.

Just let the 4AA use & display the LCD panel.

Canon Speedlite 580 EX (mark 1) 6 years of continuous use - single flash, multiple flash & continuous burst - with rechargeable batteries. All is well, until recently. Now recharge time has quickly...

The capacitor (neck) is no longer hold a charge or charging circuit is going out on a extended breaks.

Save your money and buy ATG's Godox TT685c.
If you buys two, then you got ATG wireless radio ETTL II flashes.
It would cost over $1,000.00+ USD to buy two Canon 600EX II-RT just to do the same with two ATG's.

BLURRED PICTURE WHEN USING MOUNTED FLASH.

If you are not using canon lenses then the low light focusing aid will not work correctly. Go into the menu and turn of the flash infra red light

Battery dies right away

You might want to try NON rechargeable batteries, particularly "digitally" rated alkalines. If this won't do it, I'd take it to get looked at.
