My SB800 will not fire. It comes on, but the flash
When you shoot like crazy, like shoot with a very low ISO and take many flash photos the flash works hard. You can hear the recharge cycle and it takes a while to recharge and get the red LED back on. So you were using the flash and it got HOT. When it gets HOT it shuts down. It is supposed to STOP working when it gets hot. If you want to shoot like crazy you have to get the flash a break and shoot a higher ISO.
How do i change from remote ttl on my nikon sb800.
Press the Menu button. Scroll to the Custom Setting Menu. Scroll to "e Bracketing/flash". Right arrow and scroll down to "e3 Flash cntrl for built-in flash" and push the center button. You now have access to the TTL, Manual, Repeating flash and Commander modes. Right arrow on CMD and a menu will appear that allows you to set up the built in flash and the external flash groups.
Sb 800 continually flashes on it's own
Make sure contacts are not touching
Slightly tap your flash on the table to see if switch is not stuck
If not you might have to take to nikon
They will tell you whats wrong before you have to pay

The pre=flashes are for reduction of red eye and also for TTL indormation for camera to wotk properly with flash. Read Flash manual and some info in camera manual
SB-800 makes strange noise and over exposes image when it does work
The flash has settings you will have to read your manual
the camera does the exposers not the flash
set your cameras appuatue to a high number and speed fast then shoot if you knew how to use your camera you would know the flash is uesd for filling in shadows and imitating the sun which is bright. Good luck

Yes did you set the camera also go to flash/bracketing on your camera and set they both have to work together

Hi John, if you keep pressing the mode button, the various settings will show on the screen. Then press SEL, (select), in the centre of the control button to lock it.
