I kicked my HD by accident, now my laptop does not recognize the Western Digital 1TB My Book external HD. I tried to plug it in from different USB ports, tried with my desktop, and my parents' desktop but none of the computer is able to recognize it. However, whenever I plugged it in, the computer makes a sound. I calle WD for data recovery, they refered me to their ''authorized'' centers but the price range from $400 to $1200 depends on the condition of the drive. Things in the drive are not really valuable, but it's the sentimental value that possess that cannot be replaced (photos).

Hello there,

There might be a disconnected wire inside your My Book, preventing it to be detected by your computer. Or maybe a broken part that needs to be resoldered. But dont worry, you harddrive is still secure.

What you need to do is to take off the hard disk inside and place it in another USB hard disk enclosure. How to do that, here is a video that could guide you.

Or if you dont have an enclosure you can place that inside another computer for it to detect it as data drive.

If you have further questions, please let me know.

PS3 can recognize only hard disks that are formatted on FAT32. Since now the disk is formatted to HFS (a format only Mac's are using) you can't make it work. Save all the files on it and reformat it to FAT, then put back the files and only then connect it to the PS3.

The filesystem on the drive could have become corrupt. If you can run a utility on it to see if it finds any problems, that would be the first step. I would try Norton Utilities. Otherwise, try plugging your drive into another computer and see if it can recognize it.

MY 1TB Western DIgital Ext Hard Drive is not recognized

Go to add new hardware wizard. This may not come with a disk if you do have a disk it will ask you to put disk in. If you do not find it there go to the HCL directory of the western digital website for installation directions.

Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.
