It seems that the installation files from the disc is corrupted. I suggest that you first connect your laptop to another router so you can download the drivers from Linksys Support Site. Under Downloads tab, you must choose the right version which can be found at the bottom of the router. Then install the said drivers before you connect to the WRT54GS router. Hope it helps.
normally you don`t need a driver for your wireless router just you need to get its default IP address from its manual, connect to it via a cable, and configure it, then you are there..
Did you install the software first? If you have the install disc- unhook router and run CD. Follow directions and connect router when instructed. If you do not have a cd go to Linksys and download the software and run the file.
The problem here is that the WRT54GS is an old model, so naturally the installation CD is also old. This is especially a problem if you are running Vista. I ran into the same problem when I was installing my wireless card; my computer would detect it on boot up, but when I installed the drivers from the CD, it said the card wasn't plugged in.
The solution would be to download the lastest installation and driver files from the LinkSys website and use those instead of the installation CD that came with it. You may have to hunt for it, as some companies would rather push new products than update older ones, but since the router is still on the market, they should have the updated drivers and installation files.
You more than likely do not need an installation CD to get this router running. For what it's worth, you can download specs, firmware upgrades, etc from the following link:
that didn't help, I still need a download for the set up for this router
