Define after a while ?

It may be normal (sort of) it is not unusual to have to clear the cache on routers and cable / dsl modems on occasion

This is done by powering down all the computers and network equipment and then turning it on one at a time starting at the modem and working back to the computers allowing each item to fully boot before moving to the next

This can also be caused by the router auto assigning IP address.

All my computers each have their own IP address and I leave room for alternative connections between IP's

eg computer 1=192.168.1.1
computer 2=192.168.1.10
and so on

You have to learn a little more about IP's and DNS but it does make for a much more reliable network My WHS runs 24/7 as does my box and my GF's and we have a rock solid connection 99.9 % of the time with weeks or months between having to re-boot the network

Hi
First thing I would check is try another ethernet cable, by any chance have you recently bought a 3G cordless phone, if so they operate at same frequency as the router!!

Cheers cbacer

Can I disable wireless and connect with ethernet cord and modem, for work do not want remove wireless cord, in the day want to be able to use my wireless.

Are you talking about direct-connecting via Ethernet to a cable or DSL modem? You shouldn't have to disable wireless to do that. If the cable modem has an open Ethernet port, you should be able to run a straight-thru Ethernet Cat-5 cable between that port and the Ethernet port on your laptop. The laptop should recognize that it is connected to the modem through the direct connection. Check the manual for the cable modem or information supplied by your ISP for connection details. You may have to do some setup on the modem to get an Internet connection, like having your ISP 'activate' the modem. Just be sure your Ethernet cable is a straight-thru, standard Ethernet cable, and not a 'cross-over' cable such as is used to transfer data between two computers.

We have cable internet provided by Virgin. I am accessing the internet by plugging the ethernet cable dirctly into my laptop rather than via my DI524. Have just read a post that says I have to be connected...

If you can connect to the internet using the Ethernet cable on your laptop then the cable modem is configured correctly.
If you want to connect to the Internet using the D-Link wireless router then first you need to configure the D-Link wireless settings and then configure the wireless card in your laptop with the D-Link's wireless settings. Remove the Ethernet from the laptop and connect it to the WAN/Internet port on the D-Link wireless router.

My ADSL 2+ works fine with wireless, but not with a local area connection. My PC uses this. I,ve switched cables, tried a cable with the laptop, and reset the router. No change. Any ideas? Steve

If the wireless connection is working fine it show that your internet security is fine and you can access net without problem
there could be a connection issues a within the cables
1) Connect the Ethernet cable to the Laptop and connect the other end to router E1.
2) Open the command windows (DOS ) by typing cmd or command on the Run option ..
START- RUN- type command then hit Enter
3) In the black command windows - Type IPCONFIG
c:\> IPCONFIG hit enter
it will provide with the correct IP ADDRESS and Gate Way Address
Check the gateway address - shout strat with 192.168.X.X
If it is not there is some problem -
4) Check the Device manager and check the Ethernet Adapter whether the adapter is enabled or Disables or Drivers are installed or not

Wireless broadcast is usually the first thing to go when a router is failing. How old is your router? Try these steps:
Turn off computer
Remove power from router
Remove power from modem
Wait 2 minutes
Restore power to modem
Wait for modem to boot up and gain all signals
Restore power to router
Wait for router to completely powerup
Watch for wireless indicator light
Boot up computer, verify your wireless network is broadcasting
Connect

If you still can not get the wireless network to access the internet, try connecting your computer with an ethernet cable. If everything connects fine and you can access the web, it might be that your router is going bad and needs replacing.

Try running the ethernet cable from the modem to port #2 on your router. Then run the second cable from port#3 on the router to your computer. This effectively uses the router as a pass-thru and bypasses all its functions. If you are able to access the internet this way, you need to replace the router.

Netgear WG602 wireless router, Connection Local only !

What I think is you unplgged them at the wrong times.

Do this:
(in this order)
  1. Turn off the router.
  2. Turn off the modem.
  3. take out all the Ethernet cords from the router, EXCEPT the one coming from the modem
  4. Now turn the modem on.
  5. Wait for the lights, then wait about another minute for it to settle.
  6. Turn on the router, make sure the Internet,Lan,Wlan, etc lights are on and functional if it doesn't display a light let me know.
  7. Now depending on what your wireless network (SSID) is called try to connect to it. Go to Start>Network>Click Network And Sharing Center at the top>on the left select Manage Wireless Networks>now click add, if your network is already on the list shown select it and click remove otherwise click "Add" click "add network in reange of this computer" select your network name and click connect.
Now tell me the errors, like if it says connection limited,etc...

Thanks,
Cam
