Most of the NUVI units will show you your coordinates, but none show you your altitude, to my knowledge. When you ask if they can be used as a "handreceiver", again, the NUVIs can be set to "Pedestrian" mode and used hand held.

My Gamin Nuvi can't unlock maps

Use a Garmin 1450

The Garmin Nuvi 1450 can be used while driving or walking.

While driving, use the Nuvi 1450 to create a route to your destination and get step-by-step directions, to hear the names of upcoming streets, to tell you when to change lanes and to find out the speed limits on unfamiliar streets.

As a pedestrian, you can have the Nuvi 1450 create a route for you that uses a mixture of walking and public transportation, such as the subway or bus system, if you have purchased cityXplorer maps for that area.

Tap "Where to?" to set up a route. The "Where to?" icon is a large magnifying glass.

Tap "Addresses." The available categories are address, points of interest, go home, recently found, favorites and intersections.

Input the name of the state or county, if it is out of town.

Then tap "Spell city." Spell out the name of the city using the pop up keyboard.

Press "Done."

Enter the address number and press "Done."

Then enter the street name and press "Done."

The "Go" screen opens automatically.

Tap the green "Go" button. The Nuvi 1450 will now calculate a route to the address.

Follow the voice prompts and map highlight to your destination.

Navigate Using Coordinates

Tap "Where to?" and then tap "Coordinates."

Tap the coordinate you want to adjust/input a new coordinate.

Tap "Format" to choose the right coordinate format for the map you are using.

Enter the coordinates. Tap "Next."

Tap the green "Go" button to calculate a route.

Use the Map Page

Navigate to your destination by following the voice prompts, highlighted route on the map and directions located at the top of the map screen.
Tap the "turn" icon located in the upper left corner of the screen to see the next turn. It may have a turning or straight arrow and the number of miles until the turn. Tap the bar across the top with the next direction listed on it to see a list of all directions.

Tap the plus or minus signs on the right side of the screen to zoom in or out.

Press the spinning arrow in the lower left corner of the screen to return to the main menu.

Tap the "car" icon traveling along the highlighted route to enter the "Where Am I?" screen and get your exact location, coordinates and nearby emergency services.

Hope this helps

Garmin Street Pilot. No upgrades available from Garmin. Can it be updated some other way?

Hi Steve,

The Street Pilot line was one of the first automotive GPS devices from Garmin, and has got to be 8+ years old. Garmin contracts with Navteq for map software. At one point, Garmin needed to have Navteq compress their new maps so that they wouldn't need to increase the amount of memory in the GPS units and still be able to include all the way points, and new features such as junction view, traffic receivers, text to speech voices, etc. These new maps have an "NT" descriptor in the title. "NT "stands for "New Technology". Non-NT maps are no longer produced.

The new Garmin GPS hardware had to included the ability to decompress maps "on the fly" for display on the screen. As a result, the NT maps will not work in the older Garmin devices.

Your best bet is to either use the Street Pilot - knowing that the routes may no longer provide accurate information, or purchase a New, Refurbished or Used GPS. Garmin offers "Lifetime Maps" as an option for nearly all NT capable GPS units either as a subscription after GPS purchase, or "in the box" when buying a Garmin GPS. You'll get FREE map updates for that GPS up to 4 times per year. This assures you of always having the most recent maps available in your GPS. Look for a model that has "LM" in it (ie: nuvi 1490LM). If it has a "T" in the model name (ie: nuvi 1490T), it has Lifetime Traffic. If it is listed as "LMT" (nuvi 1490LMT) it has both Lifetime Maps and Lifetime Traffic.

I hope helps!

How do i insert a coordinate to find a spesific fishing spot

Hello,

The Garmin nuvi's were designed as automotive navigators and not really designed to be used as marine or outdoor GPS units with the exception of the nuvi 550 which is an all around GPS.
The Garmin handhelds are recommended for marine and off road recreational use but it is possible to navigate if you know the coordinates of your fishing spot.
To enter coordinates: Touch Where to? > Coordinates and touch a box to enter a coordinate.
You can also refer to the manual for more information. nüvi® 215

On my garmin streetpilot 7200 it says maps are locked...

I'm not sure if the street pilot is the same as the garmin nuvi. There are details of how to unlock Garmin Nuvi satnav maps at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6197735-no_detailed_maps_found_support_routing
There's more information there than you'll need but you can skip to the part on unlocking maps. I'd imagine the street pilot wouldn't be a whole lot different from the nuvi as they're both made by garmin.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 205W and have saved a number of places as favourites. However, when I want to share the location with friends by giving them the map coordinates of these places I cannot find how to...

To view the coordinates of a saved location on your nuvi

  1. Touch Tools (wrench icon)
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Touch System
  4. Turn ON the GPS Simulator
  5. Touch OK
  6. Hold Back to return to the main menu
  7. Touch Where To?
  8. Touch Favorites
  9. Select a favorite location
  10. Touch Show Map
  11. Touch Set Location
  12. Hold Back to return to the main menu
  13. Touch Tools1
  14. Select Where Am I
Here you will see the coordinates for the saved location.
1. For nuvi 200 series units that do not have the Where Am I feature, skip the above steps 13-14. The coordinates can be found by pressing the vehicle icon on the View Map page.
