There is a black metal ******** one side that is actually a lever and with the tip of a screw driver or the like, pops out and releases the front roller.

SOURCE: broken drive belt on belt sander

My answer comes almost a year after the original question, but I'll post it anyway for those who end up here after a search.
Black & Decker no longer supplies drive belts for the BR400 sander, but you can get a replacement elsewhere if you know what to ask for.
The belt is a synchronous, single-sided "XL" series belt, and mine had 120XL031 printed on it. The belt width is 0.31in or 5/16in or 7.9mm. Its pitch (distance from tooth to tooth) is 0.20in or 1/5in or 5mm. Its total height is 0.09in, and tooth height is 0.045in. It has 60 teeth, making the total length 12in.
I found a replacement at sdp-si.com, part number A 6R 3-060031.
Look here for timing belts (inch), then narrow the search for single-sided, .200 (XL) pitch, 60 grooves, 5/16 width.

Clarke Woodworker 4" Belt 6" Disc Sander Model BT1009A. I need the 6" round aluminum disc for it. I think the part number is NT821588?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved from Welding tools category.

I have the same unit! Unfortunately not much available for it now. You could have one made at an engineering shop locally.

Where can I buy replacement idler drum for Clarke 6" disc sander. Model BT1009. Part #BT1009A-65

I strongly suspect the item is of generic Far Eastern manufacture (label engineered) and with minimal parts backup.

If parts are available they will be sourced from Clarke Tools or Machine Mart.

I would recomment trying a local rental yard. they usually have the paper and machines for rent. If not let me know and I will do some more research with Clarke, give me your general area with zip code and I will try and find a local source.

Clarke plate sander vs drum for a floor that only needs

drum sander leaves chatter marks you must plate these out. belt sander is the best way to go, however it will take longer to just plate than to drum and plate. for light sanding i would start with a 60 grit on the drum, then 80, then 100. plate with 100 screen till chatter free, then final with 150 screen. this is if you intend to go to raw wood.

cordless is easier to use, but if you use the sander for a big job the cord models are better for due to continues power supply.
