How do you replace the drive belt on a Porter Cable Belt Sander

I have ordered and received a replacement belt for a Porter Cable Model 361 Type 6 belt sander 3X24. What is the trick to get the belt on? I can not get it around the driver gear and the driven pulley. Do I need to take the whole thing apart or is there an adjustment that will allow me to put the drive belt on?

I have tried that but the belt gets so tight it feels like it's going to snap. So, I didn't force it. Is that the only way to put it on or is there a way to release one of the gears?

I think you might have misunderstood my question. I am trying to replace the drive belt (inside the cover plate) not the sanding belt.

  • jason_stroll May 28, 2009

Okay, thanks for all the help. I'll try rolling it on.

Another thot, if you can't roll it on, is to immerse the belt in hot water for about 30 seconds, then quickly try the roll on method again.

    jmorganti,

I think you are describing installing the sanding belt. The question is how to install the drive belt.

    jason,

If you can get the edge of the belt on the small gear, I don't think you're going to snap it by using that method ("rolling" it on).

I think the trick is to get as much slack as you can in the belt on the side opposite the way you are rolling the little gear.

The notches in the belt will grab the spline on the gear and cause it to tighten even when the belt is long enough to go onto the gears. It has to be "kinda finessed on".

I looked at the schematic of this sander. It looks like all the rest of them to me.

Have you tried putting the belt on the large gear first, then putting the edge of the belt on the small gear and turning the small gear? This usually "rolls" the belt into place.

There is a lever on the side at the front right near the roller that you can use to release the spring tension on that roller (moving it slightly to the rear).  Once the tension is released you can slip the sanding belt onto both rollers from the side.  Release the lever and the spring will put tension on the belt to hold it in place.  Use the knob on the left side to center the belt on the roller if it starts to slip sideways when in use.

Some form of adhesive cellophane spun off the drive drum of my older model type 6 belt sander and belt now slips.

the cellophane probable cane off of the belt, clean it off, replace check the tension of belt, it should be tight. If it loosens the heat buildup from slippage will damage belt. Here is a place that has replacement parts. I too has an older sander that was about 50 years old, and finally retired it and went with a Marita, it it a light lighter.

I have a Porter Cable Model 371 2.5" X 14" Belt Sander. I broke a belt, when I did it jammed and also broke a rubber sleeve that covers the Drive Wheel. I have yet to find this rubber sleeve in any part...

Unfortunatly that sleeve is not available, you will need to purchase a whole new drive wheel. The Drive wheel is $9.66 from DeWalt Service Net. Porter Cable, Delta & DeWalt are all owned by Stanley Black & Decker, you can contact DeWalt Factory Service for all parts. 1-800-4-DeWalt You can order the parts on-line, over the phone or though a local service center. The website is www.dewaltservicenet.com Below is the parts diagram for your sander. The part number for the drive wheel is A16439

Replacing sand paper

Look on the side of the tool between the guide and drive wheels for a lever

Loosening or disengaging this lever will take the tension off of the belt so that it can be removed

If there is no lever, there will be a tension know on the front of the tool that you can loosen to remove the belt

I need a switch for my Porter Cable Heavy Duty Belt sander model 361. PLEASE HELP ME LOCATE A SWITCH.

You didn't specify what type but I looked at a type 7 or so and the switch number is 697452 and list is 14.00. You should be able to buy that online or I would suggest if you have an electrical supply house in your area taking that one and matching it up, there is nothing special about it other than size, BUT make sure that they get one for the proper amp draw which is listed on switch. Let me know if I can help further
