Hey Roberts,
Your PC is really very very old. But I hope that NCR 128mb DDR Memory will perfectly work on your old PC.
You can search this 128MB DDR with Part No (7402-F232).

DDR or DDR2

DDR 266 is DDR, not DDR 2 . The 266 is the frequency value in Mhz.

Try having the memory refunded or resell it on Ebay, so that you do not lose your money.

Here is supported memory, many older motherboards do not accept modules of over 512Mb each, ask to the seller:

New ram not speedy

well, the lowest speed of those rams will be effective for all rams. If you install same sized ram on 1st and the 3rd port, it should be run on dual channel mode and will be fastest possible. please try this if you have 4 ports.

Want to add memory to Gateway 700x

Upgrading RAM on your Gateway 700X (DDR) Computer is easy, Gateway 700X (DDR) Computer takes the PC3200 DDR SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR. RAM Type, and comes installed with 512 MB (removable) of RAM.
You can upgrade your Gateway 700X (DDR) Computer to up to a maximum of 2.0 GB RAM, the Computer has 4 sockets to install RAM, already with 512 MB (removable) standard RAM installed. For best Computer performance use the maximum amount of allowed RAM per slot for your system.

Ram issue with compaq presario 5000 G1 Series

as you can see from the information below there are different requirements for RAM to work stable in your system . Most importand are the RAM VOLTAGE , SPEED , and Configuration of chips. you will need to consult the manual for qualified RAM requirements. Some RAM will work but not very stable. make sure the voltage supplied by your system is enough for the RAM. If you are running DDR RAM in dual channel mode, the ram needs to be the same size also. DIMM modules for the HP computer must meet the following requirements
  • The number of pins on the DIMM must match the socket type.
  • DDR memory requires a 184-pin slot and 1.8 operating voltage.
  • DDR2 memory is not compatible with DDR1 memory and requires a 240-pin slot and 2.5 operating voltage.
  • Synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM): Only use DDR type SDRAM memory if the computer came with DDR-SDRAM.
  • SO-DIMM modules for the HP computer must meet the following requirements
    • The number of pins on the DIMM must match the socket type.
    • SO-DIMM memory requires a 200-pin slot.
    • DDR2 SO-DIMMs are not compatible with DDR1 DIMM and DDR2 DIMM memory modules.
    • With a computer running at a system bus of 533 MHz or 667 MHz, use a PC2-4200 (DDR2 DIMM 533) type.
    • The following requirements must be met for the DDR memory to function in dual channel mode:
      • Same density (256MB, 512MB, etc.)
      • Same DRAM chip technology (x8 or x16)
      • All either single-sided or dual-sided
      • Matched in both Channel A and Channel B memory channels

I have a compaq with a 90 gig hard drive, at presenr I am running 384 bytes of RAM. How much will this PC safely handle?

Depends! The amount of RAM has nothing to do with capacity of the hard drive. If your motherboard is a P3, it probably has to memory slots that will handle 256mb each (512 total). It sounds like you have a 128mm chip and a 256mb chip installed now. I won't even attempt to run XP with less than 256mb of RAM. You can run XP with 128mb, but not very well. With Windows XP SP2, you will have to have at least 256MB. Most P4 or newer computers use DDR RAM wich can be bought at larger capacity (ie 1000MB).
