I have to replace my Primary hard drive I have installed a 1 TB seagate but can't install windows. It just goes so far and then stops. even the factory back up disks I made will only go so far then stop.
Factory back-up discs and recovery discs are intended to repair defective installations or to kick-start an installation that refuses to start so it is unsurprising they will only go so far.
Your system disc might be defective. This is a problem I have had with XP in the past. It is possible your CD/DVD drive has a dusty lens and is unable to read the disc properly or perhaps the new hard drive has a problem.
I suggest you instal the new hard drive as a slave in another computer and format it and run the chkdsk utility. If all is well reinstal in your computer.
Take a close look at your system disc checking for flaws and perhaps put a lens cleaning disc in your CD/DVD reader before trying again.
Testimonial: "Thank you for your help. I don't know how but I had added a small partition to the original hard drive. when I deleted this I was able to use the Alt/F10 factory restore which worked perfectly. It is now up and running and installing the 207 windows updates issued since I first bought it. Thanks again. Tony"
One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electic extensions or just replace them they are probably faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error hope this helps don

Hi Tony Poyner, we want to help you with your question, but we need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
Do you have access to a desktop P.C , With two SATA ports ?
Is the original Hard drive ok to directly copy to the new drive ?
if yes then
Turn off desktop p.c.
plug in acer m3970 hard drive into SATA port
plug second drive into other SATA port
turn on desktop p.c.
install EASE US TODO Backup Free 8.0 software onto desktop p.c's hard drive
Select Clone hard drive and clone acer m3970 hard drive
to the
new drive.
THen use a partition manager software to resize the partition or make another partion on the new hard drive in the free space.
I think the problem you may be experiencing is that Windows needs an active partion and the new hard drive may be not set as an active partion.
I used the cloning method when I copied a laptop hard drive to a new SSD hard drive
