That is a baby Male Fire Ant (almost as rare as the Queen, and not red colored). It left a nearby nest along with one baby Queen, at this time of year, because there is now more than one Queen in the nest. There is _one_ Queen that lives for about 7 years and a few males that die immediately after mating with her. Normally the two (plus a few workers) will go off and start their own nest. Unfortunately for both of you, it found you before it found a new nest.
By the way, I lived in California until I was 6 years old. My most vivid memory was getting bitten by hundreds of worker red fire ants. (I fell onto them while playing. It was just as bad as the nest of yellow jackets I fell into in Up State New York a few years later).
I am certain of what I am telling you.
