Memory card (size) used is probably exceeding camera capability.

I Googled the camera, and came up with this :
"Maximum quality JPEG files are around 3MB each, about average for a 6MP camera, and a freshly formatted 1GB SD card is enough for approximately 361 shots, or seven minutes 49 seconds of video shooting. It's worth noting however that the S3 does not support the new SDHC memory card format.

So it looks as if you are limited to an SD card.

Expanding on 1st answer, your camera might not accept today's higher capacity memory cards.

Check the specs online and get a small card if needed.

You may need to get a used card from ebay, for example, as many smaller size cards are out of production. They would probably be quite inexpensive if you can find them.

Canon digial camera power shot SD430 says memory card error when switching on after putting new card in.

What type and size memory card? The SD430 works with MMC and SD cards, 2GB and smaller. It will not work with higher-capacity SDHC cards even though they will fit into the slot.

If your camera is the type that uses SD cards, then your problem is that the camera was developed in 2004 before SDHC cards were invented. Your camera cannot use them.

Is the new card more than 2GB? 4GB "SD" cards are almost always actually SDHC (high capacity) cards. Anything larger than that certainly is (and a few 2GB cards as well). SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different electrically. Many cameras won't work with SDHC cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

I bought a memory card San Disk (SDHC) 4 GB and when I put it into my Power Shot A 700 says memory card error. What can I do?

the reason you are getting the error message is because your camera is compatible with a maximum capacity of 2gb. try to have your sd card replaced to a 2gb instead.

Memory card is locked

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.
