I have a Canon power shot A520 , couple of years old. Just started saying "no memory card", even tho I've replaced the memory card w/ a new one and changed the batteries. When I try to reformatt the card, it won't let me choose "format" from the menu. What's up ??? thanks

Is the new card more than 2GB? 4GB "SD" cards are almost always actually SDHC (high capacity) cards. Anything larger than that certainly is (and a few 2GB cards as well). SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different electrically. Many cameras won't work with SDHC cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

Canon A520 have CR1220 battery as memory backup power. Replace it. It's located at left hand side there is grey rubber cap open it, you will find one more small flap at bottom, gently pull out straight you will see a battery holder remove CR1220 battery replace same type with new one. Purchased new memory card for my canon powershot A520 and I keep getting a "memory card error". I've purchased two different cards and get the same error message. Original card that came with...

From page 145 of the A520 user manual, it appears that the largest SD memory card that this camera is able to use is a 512MB SD memory card. The manual is dated "2004", so this size limitation is not unusual for a camera of this era.
If you've purchased anything larger, there is a good chance that it won't work with this model camera.

I have a Canon Power Shot A520 and have just put in a new memory card 4GB and new batteries. When I turn on camera is says memory card error at the top of the sceen. Why is that?

The A520 is designed to work with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible.

You need to use SD cards 2GB and smaller.

Inserted a memory card and it says memory card error

Is it a new 4GB memory card? If so that might be your problem. The card would likely be an SDHC card, and your camera was designed well before the SDHC format came out. Your camera can only use standard SD cards (2GB or less).

But if the card is less than 2GB, it could have become corrupted. In this case you could try formatting the card in the camera to see if this would rejuvenate it. This will also erase the card. See this post if you wish to first recover those pictures.

Finally, if this is occurring with multiple cards, and is also saying "card locked" even though the tiny slide switch is in the unlocked position, then see this post for a possible remedy.

Can't upload photos with Canon Powershot A520

If the other solutions didn't work for you, you can always buy a memory card reader for around $30... Or your comptuer, if it was made in the last year or 2, may have an SD card reader built in...

Camera Memory Card Error, Canon Power Shot A520.

It sounds like your card is the problem. Try using a different card in your cam to confirm this. You might try to format the card (should be a menu that lets you do this) to see if that helps. Also check the connectors on the card and make sure they are not dirty or broken.
