The usual cause is that the transmit button on the mike is broken or stuck in the "talk" position. If you disconnect the mike and the radio, then turn the radio on and it still is showing transmit, then the issue is inside the radio or the connector for the mike.
If the radio stays in receive mode with the mike disconnected, look at the mike connector for any bent pins or damage to the connector. If you don't see anything, try spraying electronic contact cleaner , the could be some corrosion that is causing a short here. Another thing, if you have it, is to use a different mike and see if that works properly.
I'll give you my best guess since I sold my JA3ES and am doing this from memory. Check your analog connector cables are good, be certain you have the input switch set to analog input.
Be certain you are not setting your inputs for the microphone jacks. If you are getting the error message din unlock the recorder is not getting the signal from the analog source.
It is possible to have damaged analog inputs on a used machine, but you have micorphone jacks and might get adaptor cables to hook your analog inputs in through the microphone jacks. Note this machine is old enough the microphones are 2 mono microphones left and right. If you want to use a modern stereo microphone you need an adaptor cable for that too.
If you try the above be careful as the mike jacks are really for mikes not what I mention, but it is a probable go around if your rear analog jacks are damaged for some reason.
The reason that jack doesn't work for a microphone is because it's a headphone jack. It's meant to send a signal out to headphones, and it doesn't work as an input. If the receiver doesn't have a microphone input jack (and it would be clearly labeled as such), you'll need to connect your mike through the auxiliary input. You may be able to connect with nothing more than an adapter to switch from the plug on the end of the mike cable to the RCA jacks on your receiver. The output level on some mikes may be high enough to drive the auxiliary input as-is. More likely, though, the mike will need a little boost to make it work with the receiver. The receiver needs a "line-level" input, which is higher than the output of most good-quality mikes. To get the mike up to line level you'll need a microphone preamp. There are many types from many sources, at a wide range of prices. Here's one I have used as an example.
You might also want to look for a small mixer like this. The mixer would let you combine your mike and music source into a single line-level output you could run to the receiver, and use the receiver just for the amplifier function.
Adding a mike doesn't create echos/feedback. Windows? Version? Right click on speaker icon in lower right and go to recording device mixers, can mute and adjust level of sound sources, also microphone power and pre-amp. Telephones and other devices (laptops) with both input and output will feedback unless the input is "noise cancelling", so you will have to be much more careful with the placement of the external mike compared to using the built in mike.
Sounds like you are getting some feedback from somewhere. I would check inside the mic connector for a shorted, loose, or twisted wire then check inside the mic itself for same, if you can, try a different mic that is wired for your radio, my bet is there is some stray RF floating around somewhere.

No can do the set cant deal with that signal. turn off prgressive scan on the DVD the signal is still a preaty good one. Only blue ray or HD DVD will get the real HD.
I understand you know what you are doing, but sometimes step by step tips might help you with something you could have overlooked, so here we go;
- You have selected the proper driver for the recordings (mike input) in : Volume Settings ~ Options ~ Properties ~ selcet the right mixer
- There is no other audio program installed that overruled the standard Windows setting to use another input driver or I/Face ?
- I am not 100% sure if the 5100 has a front entry Mike input, but if so, have you checked that input, instead of the standard backside input ?
- I know that some Dells have a small applet running that automatically detects if a device is connected to the mike input or speaker output. Play a bit with these connectors in/out, speaker/mike. Maybe the applet pops up and needs to be reconfigured. I'm sorry I cannot tell you which applet it is and how to start it from Windows, maybe someone else can help with that.
- Try the straight forward program Windows recorder in Start ~ Programs ~ Accessories ~ Entertainment ~ Sound Recorder ~ Edit ~ Audio Properties and selecxt the proper Audio Interface.
You are wasting your time if the component you're hooking it up to is not High Definition... Tv can't produce any better quality from connector to connector you have to up the type of signal being input.
