I need to know how to do a factory reset a SYLVANIA SMARTBOOK without the password because I cannot remember it and what does the bios chip look like ?

You can't reset the password unless you know the current password. All you can do is a factory reset. There's a small hole on the back marked "reset" about 1in. diagonally from the right lower corner of the data plate. Leave the tablet switched on and push a straightened paper-clip into that hole for 10 seconds. This should reset it to the factory specs.

If there is a small door on the bottom of the smartbook, open it with a screwdriver. See if you have access to the coin battery that is in there. That stores the password in the memory. If you have access to that battery, unplug or remove it for approximately 10 minutes and then reinsert it. That should reset it.

download and copy file to SD card on anothe computer then insert it into netbook and it will automatically install.

I bought a sylvania smartbook from a threat store an it locked up on me .

Go to this website. Download the "OS Update" zip file. You'll need to unzip it to a blank 1GB SD card (they say at least 1GB, but I used my 512 and it fit). Then you put the card in the slot UPSIDE DOWN WITH TABS FACING UP! Turn on the Netbook and the entire OS will self-install. Sometimes you need to do this more than once, apparently. Just remember, this is going to ERASE your entire netbook and do a clean install of the OS. The step by step instructions are also right on the page; here's the link:

If you have forgotten your password and it is stored in the BIOS, then you can reset the BIOS to the factory default state by removing the BIOS battery, wait for over 1/2 hour for the BIOS to discharge and wipe its contents, then reconnect the battery. You will need to reconfigure the BIOS before Windows opens.

I do not know this model, but if the password is stored in an EEPROM chip then it is near impossble to reset it without knowing the actual password. It would be difficult to remove, if you know a friendly hacker with a piece of hardware that can read the contents of the EEPROM chip and then identify the password, so he can tell you what it is.
