Everyone says to do a hard reset, DONT. All you need to do is put your Google email in the user name box then put the word "null" in the password box. Once that is done it will ask you to to make a new pattern and then everything is back up and running. I went right in turned off the pattern lock, I never want to see it again. Also it might take a few trys to put the user name and password in. The second try worked for me.
Ok, So I just had the same thing happen to me last night and I just fixed it. It'll take 2 people to do it. I went on to my gmail and changed my pattern, after a few minutes my phone had a triangle with an exclamation mark come up in the notifications bar. Don't bother turning off your phone...mine didn't reset for the pattern after 7 hours of being turned off. At this point, once you get that triangle, get someone to call your phone, it'll unlock it for a few minutes. Just long enough for you to change the password on your phone by clicking into that arrow. Then your phone will lock again after the call is done. Put the new password into your phone again on this screen. Then it'll ask you to draw another pattern. Draw something simplistic, then if you want to take it back off just go back into your settings and remove the lock....just remember your pattern this time! hope this helps!
Wait, when you bought the phone from the guy, did he factory reset it first? i.e. did you have to sign in with your gmail account before using it? If the answer to that is yes, then you shouldn't have to get the other guys details. Did you put in your username as [email protected]? Because you need the googlemail, not just gmail. If the answer to the first question was no, then you could try factory resetting the phone yourself by pressing home and end call together for about 20 seconds till a triangle with an exclamation point and a phone come up, then press alt+l, then select factory reset using the trackball. However this will erase all your text messages, as the phone will be just like it was when it was bought new.
