From the Sony website:
"Sony does not recommend or support installation of the Windows Vista operating system with the PCG-FRV31 VAIO® computer. This decision is based on test results generated by installing and using the Windows Vista operating system on a PCG-FRV31computer. These results did not meet our standards for basic functionality and support. Therefore, Sony will _not_ release Windows Vista compatible drivers for this model."

You may want to download the XP sound driver, right click the file and select "properties", click the "compatiblity" tab and try to run it for XP. No guarantees on that, though. I would definitely set a restore point first.

Cpu heat
Overheating is a common problem with laptops, and usually a bit of preventative maintenance is all it takes to keep it alive. The bearings on those fans are pretty durable, however dust (and especially pet hair) can build up and slow it down. The motor may still be good, its just that the fan blades are stuck.

Blow some air in the vent OPPOSITE the direction of normal air flow (In most cases it sucks from the bottom and blows out the back/side) and if you see dust bunnies, your doing good. Be THROUGH! Especially if you smoke in your house, this causes the dust to become brown and sticky. = )

NO SOUND
As it sits right now, it looks like you have to downgrade to XP, since Sony is not posting Vista drivers for that model. I would email their support department and ask them if you can have access to the drivers, since you have already upgraded.

If I were them, I would post the drivers, but say they won't support any upgrades, rather than not making the drivers available, unless of course sony hasn't written any drivers, which is entirely possible.
