This might be a power supply issue either in the switching power supply or in the high voltage power supply. In any case you will need a schematic, a voltage meter, and if possible an oscilloscope to troubleshoot this problem. If you do not have a background in electronics I would suggest that you take the TV to a repair shop.

TV turns off/on by itself
thats why you got this TV for free I'm afraid. Your problem will cost more then the set is worth to have it repaired. Unless you understand how the differant circuits work, and know how to read a schematic, follow the circuit flow, and use a multimeter, this will not be an easy fix for you to do. There are components in the power supply that need to be replaced. Good Luck
