I am replacing a two way switch with a two way Trimatron dimmer 6681 The dimmer has 1 black wire hot, 2 red wires and a ground (green) The box has 2 black, 1 red and 2 white What do you connect...

The best thing you can do in that situation is match the wire colors of the dimmer to the colors of the screw terminals on the switch you removed. Unfortunately, its too late for that - so here's my best guess: One of the black wires in the box will be coming from the same romex cable as the red wire. Take THAT black box wire and connect it to one of the red wires on the dimmer. Take the red box wire and connect it to the remaining red wire on the dimmer. Connect the black dimmer wire to the remaining black wire in the box. The two white connectors in the box get tied together - they don't get tied to the dimmer. And the ground (green) wire on the dimmer just connects to the bare ground connection in the box itself - or to the metal backbox - or cut it off and don't use it.

I am replacing an on-off switch, with the 90610-wv dimmer. The instructions says there should be 2 black wires, and possibly a green. The wire in the existing switch has 1 white 1 black, and a bare copper...

The important thing to remember is your switch has two wires.
Sometimes the colors vary a bit because of the specific circuit.
The green wire, when present, is a ground wire, and always connects to bare copper wire.

If your dimmer has two black wires, then connect dimmer-wires to either switch-wire
If the dimmer does not work, simply reverse the two wires.

If your dimmer has a red and black wire, then connect dimmer-black to switch-black, and dimmer-red to switch-white.
Again, if dimmer does not work, reverse the two wires.

Answer back if you have trouble, and I will help.

Need to hook this up to a lutron eco-t528-277-2 ballast which only has a hot, dimmed hot and neutral

If I understand correctly, you have Leviton florescent dimmer

And you want to connect dimmer to Lutron ECO-series ballast

This is the ballast with 3 wires: Hot dimmed, Neutral and Hot

Is this your dimmer???? Has Black, White, Red, Yellow-red, & Orange

3103a3a.jpg

Here's how to do it:
Dimmer yellow-red is not used except for 3-way switch >> cap it off with wire nut
Dimmer orange wire connects to ballast Dimmed Hot
Dimmer red wire connects to ballast Hot
Dimmer white wire connects to ballast Neutral

Those are your wires going to ballast. As you can see, you need 3 wires going to florescent fixture

Next, let's focus on Dimmer:
Dimmer green wire goes to bare ground wire
Dimmer black wire connects to Hot from breaker box (we'll test for that next)
Finally the Dimmer white wire connects to ballast Neutral as discussed above BUT is also has to connect to Neutral from breaker box

This means the Dimmer white wire is connected to 2 wires >> one wire goes to florescent fixture and the other wire comes from breaker box

So which wires come from breaker box??
It should be a black and white wire.
Let's test to find Hot and Neutral that come from breaker box.

Mark your wires.
Disconnect all the wires and separate from each other
Turn on power
Use ordinary tester
Tape tester leads to wood sticks so hands stay away from electricity
Power is on
Test each wire to bare copper wire
When tester lights up, that is Hot from breaker box ... this wire connects to Dimmer black wire
Now, test the hot wire to each of the other wires
When tester lights up, that is Neutral wire ... this wire connects to Dimmer white wire, and also connects to Ballast neutral.

Connect one wire at a time, and it will work.

For a single-pole installation:

1. Connect the 2 white wires together (one from the source and the other to/from the light fixture) - 2 wires
2. Connect the black wire from the source to the black wire on the dimmer switch - 2 wires
3. Connect the black wire to/from the light fixture to the red wire on the dimmer switch - 2 wires
4. Connect the ground wires - 3 wires
