Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).
There are several possible causes for "memory card locked/protected", "memory card error", or "no memory card". Some include trying to use of a 4GB SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Others include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). 1)I have a fuji finepix J210 and have found I sometimes put the battery/card in the wrong way. Once in correct way, hey! it works. I am sure you may have tried this but just in case.........
2)Has the battery been fully charged?
Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.
Open the battery/memory card door on the bottom of the camera by sliding it towards the end of the body. Move the plastic, orange, locking switch away from the battery. The battery should then spring up slightly, enough that you can pull it out with your fingers. When you re-install the battery, make sure to put the contacts on the battery into the camera, making sure to line up the battery's orange stripe with the orange lock switch on the camera. If you need to use any force, you're doing it the wrong way.
