I have a 1993 ford explorer and have had to replace six fuel pumps in six months. The truck runs great when it is running. I have had mechanics replace everything from O2 sensors to computers and still have the same problem. Noone can find a short in any of the wiring in or out of the fuel pump and so far noone can explain the problem
Did you change your fuel filter ? if you have a bad fuel pump and install a new one whit out changing the fuel filter.
tad can cause the new fuel pump to go bad.
always replace the fuel pump strainer and fuel filter on the same time you change the fuel pump.
You might want to check with the technical service bulletins for that vehicle at a dealer even though it is older.
Have you replaced the throttle position sensor? Second, has anyone checked the voltage regulator? Is there a pattern for failure? Like damp weather, extended idle in traffic? Maybe if you turned something on like the rear window wiper or defroster there could be a power surge looking for a ground with that being your fuel pump.
Have anyone adjusted the fuel pump pressure? In each case the fuel pump was proven to be burned out? There is an inertia disconnect switch which is suppose to kill the power to the pump, but it should not send higher voltage and I imagine it was never tripped. Here is the last thing I can think of. Disconnect the wires going to the pump. Find the hot wire on the harness and try it with the ignition both on and off. See if it does cut off first. Then pull the fuse for the pump. See if it has power. It should not. If it does have power start pulling fuses until it does not. When you find the second power feed you will identify the crossed wiring.

I have changed the throttle position switch and checked the voltage regulator. It doesn't short out at any particular time as far aas the weather goes. The last time the fuel pump went we were driving down the highway on a gorgeous spring day. No heater or defrost or anything like that. JUust stopped pumping gas.
