SOURCE: Hard Disk Problem

Hi,

first download and install Drive Rescue . Click on Find lost drive, select the drive you miss and click "find logical drives". Now you should access all of your files. Save them to another drive and format the hard disk.

hope to be helpful

SOURCE: Disk detection On and Off

You could have a partially defective hard drive and could fail permanently at any time.
Try reseating the hard drive and if you manage to get the laptop up and running, I would suggest you back up your data before the hard drive fails.

SOURCE: harddisk not detected in disk management but recognized in bios

If it detected in bios it should also show up in disk management even if it not formatted etc.

Was there a non standard file system on it before you put it in the computer as I have had issues when I have played with LINUX and some other OS in the past.

You could always try the UBCD which can handle way more than windows can when it comes to hard drives.

Just replaced my hdd on Compac Presario 2100 but the system is not detecting it.

This model laptop came with a 60Gb hard disk and if you installed a much larger capacity hard disk then the BIOS cannot detect this hard disk.
For the BIOS to detect a large hard disk a BIOS upgrade is required (if there is one available) Check the HP/Compaq WEB site to see if there is a BIOS upgrade.
If not the try a 120Gb or smaller capacity hard drive.
As an alternative -
You can keep the existing hard drive in your laptop and use an external USB hard drive to store your data.

I have a laptop which it does'nt detect the hard drive what is the problem?

The problem could be one of these -
The hard disk needs reseating to make proper electrical connection.
or
The hard disk is faulty.
or
The BIOS has not detected the hard disk.
or
The hard disk controller is faulty

To determine the fault -
Reseat the hard disk and boot up the laptop.

Check the BIOS configuration - does it detect the hard disk. The BIOS may have a hard disk diagnostic, if so then run the diagnostic.

For a further hard disk test - remove the hard disk and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If the hard disk is OK then this computer will detect it as an external hard drive and you can open the folders and files.
If not then the hard disk is confirmed faulty.
To get the Gateway working, install a new hard drive and install Windows, the laptop's device drivers and your programs.

Bios not find hard disk

If the laptop cannot detect the hard drive. This can be caused by a faulty disk controller, or a faulty disk drive.

1st. Reseat the hard drive and see if the laptop boots up.

2nd. Go into the BIOS configuration and see if the BIOS detects the hard drive.

3rd. If the BIOS can't detect the hard disk, the remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer detects this drive as an external disk drive and you can see the contents of the hard drive, then the hard drive is OK and the fault is in the laptop.

4th. If the hard drive cannot be detected then the hard drive is faulty, you need to replace the faulty hard drive in your laptop and install Windows to get an operating laptop again.
