Ice build up in bottom of refridgerator, loud fan noise
Ice build up in bottom of fridge. Fan noise continues while door is closed. When door is open fan noise stops. Fridge seems ok otherwise. No problem keeping things cool. Help, please.

When the door is left open alot of condensation forms in your fridge which freezes and ices up. This build-up will gather around your evaporator fan which sometimes stops it from working or sometimes the fan blades scrape on the ice built up.
Best to manually defrost your freezer. Empty your freezer. Turn fridge off. Put a pot of boiling water and close the door. Leave for some time to defrost the ice. You can repeat this a couple of times to defrost the ice. Otherwise you can use a blow-dryer as well.
When you defrost, and turn your fridge back on. Everything should go back to normal. Ash
I believe what is happening, is your Evap fan has some build-up of ice on it. The reason it stops when you open the door, is the Evap fan cuts off. The Evap fan starts back up when the door is closed. What you'll need to do, is open the freezer door, and remove the back panel of the freezer. This takes some 1/4 inch screws and a couple Phillips I believe. Once you get the panel off you'll be able to see if there is any ice build-up on the Evap fan. If need, be take a hair-dryer on medium or low, and melt the ice off of it. This should solve your problem.
GE refrigerators have a faulty design, and so don't defrost completely, so ice builds up in the evaporator coils and on and in the evap. fan motor. Melting the ice will make the fridge more efficient, and the fan quiet again.
The slow, easy way to fix is take out all the food, unplug the fridge, leave doors open all day. Ice will melt, and all will be fine ... for a few months, until the ice builds up again. The fast way is here.
The evaporator fan motor inside your fridge is constantly trying to keep the temperature you have set it to. when the fan is on it circulates the cold air from your freezer in to your fridge. if you hear a banging noise it is cause by the fan hitting a build up of ice. this can be caused by a clogged drain pan or tube, not allowing water build up to be drained, or you could also have a defrost heater issue in which case you would have a large build up of ice near your fan. you can access the fan motor by removing the two panels at the back of the freezer, once removed you will be able to see whether or not there is a ice build up.hope this helps you Thanks.
If noise stops when you open the door, you may have a noisy fan (or could have ice build up, causing fan blade to hit ice and cause noise). I gather it is a frost-free model ie has a fan in the freezer compartment. If noise is caused by fan hitting ice build up, you may have a problem with the auto defrost system, as you should not get ice build up in a frost free.
Noise stops when you open door because fan turns off when door is opened.
the fan goes off when door opened and when closes it will turn back on is normal operation of fan and door control --as to noise --fan may be failing ---iced over ----if seal failing will cause unit to run more and allows more moisture into evap which can cause more ice over
It is most likely your circulation fan in the freezer. Normally the fan stops when you open the door. It is a normal operation. Check to make sure that the fan is not blocked by frozen items or that the fan doesn't have an ice build up. On some models the fans stops when you open the door and starts a few minutes later after you close the door.
its a heater cycle problem..the defroster is not working properly. its building up ice in the evaporator that touches the evaporator fan that makes that loud noise but stops when you open a door. it could be either a bad heater, a bad thermo disc or a bad timer.hope i was able to help
