You can download the update directly to your phone or tablet, and install it without much fuss.

use my computer running iTunes to firstly Backup the iDevice (using it's USB charge cable)
ITUNES will at this time indicate that there is an update available for your iPad.
Choose to "download only" the new iOS.
If you have other things to do!
Disconnect while the download takes it's time downloading.
Then come back later and plug in USB cable and "Install" the updated iOS.

You need to upgrade the system. iOS 6 is free and can be downloaded from Apple. Check Settings app > General > Software Update. You can also use iTunes on your computer, just connect the iPad, open the iPad menu which should pop up, and check for new software.
