When i first turn the tv on it takes about one min for the picture and sound to come on (can hardly see the picture ). it then goes off after 2 - 5 sec. and this process repeats.

Google "Capacitor bulge" and then search Youtube for your make and model to see if anyone has done an instructional video. You'll need to be comfortable dismantling the TV and be able to use a soldering iron. If this isn't you then take it to a repair shop.
If you have electronics experience - check the power supply and make sure you are getting the correct voltage to your inverter boards and main av board - also do you see any movement on the screen take a flashlight and shine on the screen - if you can see a dark image on the screen check inverter boards and power first.
Do you mean it takes 10 min for the screen to come on or don't you have sound either? Also what is the status of the LED infront of the tv when you have no picture?
the lamp has a life cicle. if yours is been used a lot. then the lamp has to be changed. when the tv cannot turn on steady and gets off imm. the computer inside the tv tries to turn off the set but the lamp charges again and the micro tends to keep working. the first step to take in this tv is to change the lamp to eliminate this common source of problems
