I have had my original ipod nano since august of last year and recently when i went to charge/update it on my laptop, it was not being recognised by my pc. everytime i connect it to my USB outlet on my laptop, a big red circle with a line through it is displayed along with the message "do no disconnect". it then freezes like this regardless if i disconnect the charger cord, and i usually have to reset the ipod or let the remaining battery run down before i can use it again. this only happens when i connecnt my ipod to my laptop but charges perfectly fine on my PS2 wich also has a USB outlet. (also note that i had a virus on my computer at the time this problem arose but the virus is not present anymore). to try and fix this bizarre problem, i bought a new charge cord, but it did not work. i also downloaded the latest itunes but to no avail. my warranty has run out and i cant afford to purchase a similar ipod at this time. did the virus that corrupted some files on my computer affected itunes and my ipod too? is my ipod stuffed forever? should i get it replaced? or does it simply need to be fixed by a professional? please help... sinceerly - sarah
Sometimes by pulling out the cord directly from the ipod, will cause permanent damage, because it happened to me. You should always eject the ipod from itunes.
however, you might want to try to get "Apple Update" and install the firmware for the ipod over again. Or, get new driveers for your laptop.

Ensure that your iPod is fully charged first. Another reason your ipod could be shutting off is that your headphones are not properly seated. I
f music stops playing when the screen goes dim, it is because the nano does not detect the headset. Remove and then firmly re-insert your headphones. 1. Failing that, your first fix would be to set your Nano for a sync, then restore it. This will automatically restore the Nano to its original settings.
2. If this doesn't work, run an update the same way you did for the 1.1 update. If the original update went wrong, this should rectify the situation. Don't end the sync until the onscreen directions tell you.
3. If you are still having problems, it might be good to visit your Apple Store, if you have one nearby. Document the issue clearly, so the tech can determine if it's a software or hardware problem.
worst case scenario is that a circuit has broken inside. But your ipod will be under warrenty for a year from purchase.
Otherwise, leave the ipod to charge for a long time. Just leave it connected directly to the computer USB port despite not having any change in appearance. Also, don't connect it via a usb hub or through your keyboard. You will need to plug it into your computer directly.
