One user (Colin S.) posted this problem, and i have the same problem. however, the solution provided did not work. "The Maxtor drive shows up under "Disk drives" in the Device Manager and according to the status is working properly. However I cannot access the drive as it does not show up in My Computer. I have uninstalled and installed in device manager but it makes no difference. Habe also disabled/enabled but to no effect. Can anyone suggest a solution?"
The volume partition may be failing. So your machine can see the drive but you still cannot read or write to it. I would open it and extract the drive, to eliminate whether the drive and / or enclosure is at fault.
