Toshiba Satellite A215 S4757
My drive won't read any discs I put in it. I've tried different types of media and it doesn't make a difference. I can hear the drive trying to read the disc, but it won't actually read the disc.
I've had this laptop for about a year. Shortly after getting it, I had tried to put a game disc in and the laptop freaked out and suddenly it wouldn't show that I even had a disc drive. I came on this site and found out that it was likely some kind of codecs problem. I followed the instructions to the solution to the problem and it worked. It was approximately 8 months later that this most recent problem has occurred. I'm not sure if it's related to the previous problem or not. The drive hasn't been working for a few months now as I've not had time to research a solution.
Does your cd drive show up in my computer?
for a game disc, you dont need any codecs at all to run it. those are for recognizing certain formats of video and audio usually found in downloaded musics and movies.
let me know.
it doesnt sound related. the previous problem you had was probably related to the upper filters problem...a known problem with dvd drives.
this 2nd problem sounds like the drive has physically failed.
I would try uninstalling the device through the device manager "right click my computer, properties,hardware, device manager" and then reboot the pc...it will auto-reinstall and try again. If it doesnt work after that you'll probably have to replace it.
laptop drives are a bit more expensive then a desktop pc but if you can find a used one they are fairly cheap.

yes, the drive shows up on my computer.
In the previous problem I had had, it did not show up there. However, the drive stopped working when I put a game disc in for the previous problem. The drive worked fine for quite a while and then all of sudden now it won't read discs.
yes, the drive shows on "my computer". the previous problem occurred using a game disc. I don't really think they're related, but i thought it might be helpful to know of the previous issues.
Thank you. I will try that and let you know what happens.

unfortunately, it did not help. It reinstalled properly, but it's still not reading the disc. It seems to be responding to all other commands, it just can't read the disc. After a couple of minutes, it pops it back out and says please insert a disc into the drive. I guess that means I have to buy a whole new drive. :( That's sad after only a little more than a year and not even using it that much. Sorry I didn't get a longer warranty I guess. Thank you for your help. I will start looking for a used one.
