D-link DGL-4500 is not accessing my dsl modem

I just purchased the d-link DGL-4500 router. I have walked through the wizard setup. I have both a wireless laptop and wired desktop that I have connected to the router. Both are connecting to the router but the router is not accessing my dsl modem. In reviewing the data on the display the infomation is indicating that the router is blocking incoming ICMP packet (ICMP type 8) each time I try to access the internet (DSL modem).

Make sure the dsl modem is in bridge mode. you do this by connecting directly to the modem then accessing modem configuration page. after doing this connect the way everything was before. now go to router admin page, then setup tab at the top, then choose internet, manual setup. in the place where its says my internet connection is select PPPoE. then put in your dsl username, password and etc. save settings. this should fix the problem

You can use MAC Filters (Media Access Control) to allow LAN (Local Area Network) computers by their MAC addresses access to the Network (p. 44 in the user manual).

You can also use the built-in Firewall Settings for protection from the outside world (p. 45 in the user manual).

There is also an Access Control Wizard (p. 40 in the user manual).

Make sure you have the latest firmware as this might help with your dropped connections. Also try to make a DHCP Reservation for each computer connected to your network (p. 32 in the User Manual), as that can also help prevent dropped connections.

Download the latest firmware ver. 1.23NA to your local computer. Connect your DGL-4500 router via a wired connection (ethernet) to your computer and install the firmware update following instructions in the user manual.

I have cable internet and how would i connect the DGL-4500 wireless router to cable???

I have used Cat5e plenum Cable for my internet connection and I faced same problem. If you are just concerned with internet access and not access between devices on your LAN, then you just need to connect the first router LAN to the WAN port of the second router with the mentioned Ethernet cable. It is also in your best interest to make sure the IP ranges are different between the two DHCP servers you now have. That is, make sure they are not on the same subnet or serving up conflicting IP's.

Check the IP address of the computer.
If you aer getting the Ip address on the computer then try to ping the router.
You have changed the ISP. there is difference between the cable and DSL service provider. settings are different.
You will need to set up the router from the start.

How do i hook cables to download new firmware into my dgl-4500 from computer to router

  1. I assume you downloaded the newest firmware (version 1.21NA) from this site.
  2. Save or move it on your desktop so it's easier to find.
  3. Connect your router to your computer with an Ethernet cable.(If you're not sure what it looks like, see here.)
Do not upgrade the firmware over a wireless connection!

On the same page, look at the FAQ's. there is an entry called "How do I upgrade the firmware on my DGL-4100/DGL-4300/DGL-4500?" It is a description of the upgrade process itself and will walk you through the steps.

I'm just amazed that they miss a really important warning. Do not unplug your router or close the browser on your computer until this process is finished. This can render your router useless and you will have a nice, expensive doorstop.
When the upgrade process starts, go have a coffee, do your dishes, whatever, but: Leave the router and your computer alone! Wait until the router's reboot is completely finished.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.
