On Kenston.net, it shows how to reformat a drive that is both Windows and Mac. How about reformat a Windows "only" drive to use on Mac?

When you purchase a new hard drive for your Mac, either SATA/ATA (internal) or FireWire (external) the box that the drive comes in will likely tell you that the drive will run on both Macs and PCs. This is true, but because the drive is formatted for cross platform compatibility, some stability and facility issues could arise. It is possible that your new cross platform hard drive could have a 2 gig file size limit. Open Disk Utility, Click on the Drive, Click Partition, Choose the number of partitions, and click Apply.

I had a similar issue and was able to work around it by partitioning the drive. See this site for information: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html

Overview: Open Disk Utility, Click on the Drive, Click Partition, Choose the number of partitions, and click Apply.

(It's written for video editors, but is applicable in your situation)

For a MAC to use an external Hard drive, the hard drive has to be formatted FAT32 file system. That is the only file system MAC sees.

Installing 1tb External Hardrive from Freeagent onto Macbook Pro

I would be tempted to format the drive using the disk utility whch can be found under applications and then utilities once opened choose your drive in the left hand window and on the right hand side click on erase. If you are using the Seagate drive for the Mac only, format it as a Mac OS Extended (journaled) Choose your volume format and name and then erase. Hope this helps.

Formatting my Freeagent 1tb external hard drive for my Mac?

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

My Freeagent external hard drive doesn't show up on My Computer

Your Mac would have formatted the Seagate drive as HFS+ (journaled) format. If you have access to a Mac, copy your data off the Seagate to any Mac, then use your PC to reformat the Seagate drive in FAT32 format. Macs recognize FAT32 format, and can store data in it, but can't create the format. The Mac holding your data can store it on the Seagate in the FAT32 format, and you can then copy the files to your PC. Hope this helps.

FreeAgent Drive cannot be Modified?

The problem with the compatibility between your external drive and your mac is that freeagent drives are formatted in NTFS and the Mac uses FAT32. Mac's can read from NTFS drives but cannot write to them. I'm afraid that the only solution is to re-format the drive in FAT32 format if you want to be able to write to it.
