Parallel dongle will not work with new system that only has USB connections
I have a Designer 1 with a paralle dongle. I now have a new computer and parallel connections are no longer available. I purchased a USB to parallel convertor cable and it appears to be mapped to LPT1. The software does not see the dongle. I am using the VIP software. Is there a setting somewhere that I need to check to see why the dongle is not found.
I have a new Dell Inspiron 1545 and I can not find how to change or check the BIOS settings. I have a new Dell Inspiron 1545 and I can not find how to change or check the BIOS settings.
Geekman, thanks for the reply, but neither Viking or the software supplier seem to want to respond to requests. Sent messages a month ago and then again this week. No response.Service tag # is 19K09H1.

WE tried a PCI card and the dongle is still not found. So, it looks like we either maintain the old system, upgrade to the latest software or find new software that does not require a dongle.
We are very disappointed in the lack of response or support from Husqvarna.

Re: Parallel dongle will not work with new system that...
Those dongles will only work on a PC that have a "legacy" parallel port. Adapters will not work and even a PCI parallel port card will not work. The drivers that access those dongles were written to access the hardware(PC) directly with the old parallel ports at their real hardware address and not through the Windows OS as an LPT.
You may want to check with the vendor that supplied the dongle if they have a USB replacement as most vendors have gone that route with their dongles.
Re: Parallel dongle will not work with new system that...
The dongle only works with a standard parallel port, not a USB parallel port adapter, It may be possible that a PCI parallel adapter card will work with the dongle. Check it first with the supplier and or software supplier of Designer 1.
See if you can borrow or buy on condition of refund if it doesn't work a PCI LPT1 prnter port card. Otherwise you need to use a older computer with a standard LPT1 printer port. Update, Okay Gave it another look. I'm guessing you have a "Parallel Dongle" Meaning it plugs into the old style parallel printer port. Then the "box" is a transmitter/receiver for 3G or other wireless device. * For some reason the laptop you rec is also somewhat old and does not connect directly to wifi or other broad band network. Hence the need for the "Dongle". * Okay, really the easiest would be to get the latest (or last years model at discount) laptop. I'm using 2017 Lenovo ideapad 110s for $110 US * But if you still want to use what you have then you need the following addapter cable. Though I note it only comes with a male USB plug. I'm guessing it connects the plug or socket needs to match up with the devices you are trying to connect. Be sure you check the correct plug and pin connection, male or female (input or output). And also on the USB side as I'm not quite sure what your trying to connect to. * Brand and model would help here. * Check link below to search out the exact plug you need. Use amazon.com chat line to find out if you have the right plug. https://www.amazon.com * I've also added an adapter video similar to what you are trying to accomplish. But I suspect they have problems to with getting updated software for these older devices. * OKAY! Final answer; Your trying to connect a USB port to a Parallel PRINTER. I can tell you from experience that even if you can find an adapter it still won't work. I Just bought the Lenovo laptop as my USB Epson printer (10 years old) won't work with windows anymore. They stopped supporting the old printers with the newer upgrades. Any printer say 2005 or older won't work anymore. If your still using a parallel (ribbon pin head?) then it won't work without special software patches. I believe there are still companies using "Pinhead" ribbon printers for multi-carbonless-forms or multi-sheet-invoices. If so then the IT manager of the system needs to get with the software developer to write a software patch to allow older "serial" printers to operate on the newer platform. (you really need to call in an expert to solve this. You may need to re-vamp your forms for lazer or toner copy/fax/printer)
Here's one source for a cable: http://www.cablestogo.com/category/usb/usb-adapters/usb-ieee-printer-adapters?gclid=CPCq8pL-_LQCFQyDnQodFVMAbQ I suspect this is only the start of your problems and that your software would really work best with an XP operating system. You may want to get an old laptop computer with XP and dedicate it to you sewing machine. Check computer shops that specialize in rebuilding and selling used computers. You should be able to get one for $100-150.
If
you are using CAL (Create A Label) you must have a device called a
"Dongle" plugged into your parallel (or USB) port. This acts as the
activation key for CAL. If there is no dongle then CAL only works in
demo mode. That's why printer Icon stays grayed out. The "Dongle"
normally plugs directly into the parallel port and one end of the
parallel lead plugs into the "Dongle" while the other plugs into your
printer.
I would suggest that you download "Zebra Designer" software from the Zebra Website..This will work without any activation. If
you use ZD you must use the correct ZDesigner driver. (Install
automatically as part of ZD setup) This driver only works with ZD.
If you need to link to a database then you will have to BUY label software. Zebra Designer Pro, or Nicelabel, or Bartender....etc.
Your software still is looking for the 25 printer pin connection from the motherboard. I don't know computer set up from an engineering concept, but I do know that the usb connection you purchased doesn't work with that software. You'll need to either get the new software or a used computer with the printer port hook up.
When you purchase the Husqvarna Viking software it comes with a code key called a "Dongle". It plugs into a usb port and "unlocks" the software. You can't just load the software and have it work without the dongle and you cannot just purchase a dongle. That software is about 3 versions old and is not being supported anymore by Viking. Their new software starts at $400 and is called 4D embroidery. Their web site shows what it can do.

After checking with the Dealer, I was told my old Reader/Writer Box & embroidery software is not compatible with Windows Vista. I will have to purchase a new R/W Box which has a USB cable & a different type of dongle.
The Designer SE software does not use a dongle. If you are attempting a "Smart Update" on the Designer SE and it asks if you use a dongle, just say no and the update on the machine will run. If you have 3D or 4D software, it uses the dongle and it will be USB. Download the latest driver for your software from the Husqvarna Viking website. The link is through the homepage at Husqvarnaviking.com/us . Click links on the left side of the screen for 4D Software, Help & Updates, and Other Useful Software at the bottom of the page. This will have the latest 3D driver. 4D will require the latest update to the software and a firmware upgrade to the dongle. Run Smart Update on the software and then get the firmware update that is directly below the 3D HASP driver on the Other Useful Software page.
