Sounds like you might have accidentally pressed the DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. It turns the screen on and off to save batteries. Turn on your camera, and press this button once again to turn the screen back on.
But if your camera is also taking black pictures,
a stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so,
please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.
Thank you. It is a Canon S1 IS. The lense is not dirty and yes I am in correct shooting mode. First two saved images turned out fine but after that the images I took outside looked like melted wax
It is the same temp inside and out. I took the first shots all inside, some of which did not turn out. I did go outside to take some but not a temp shock
I have reformatted and set back to defaults. Problem is still there. I thank you for all of your help
Try setting your camera back to defaults, and maybe formatting your card when your pictures are off of it.
This could be a problem on the CCD/sensor, which Canon would have to fix.
Try the reformatting and get back to me
Where do you live exactly? It wouldn't happen to be humid or warm would it?
And you wouldn't have happened to walk outside from a cool, air conditioned house, would you?
Are you on the correct shooting mode?
Is the lens dirty?
What kind of camera is it, brand and model please
